smile Best first post ever. Hope you stick around. What a great era to have experienced.

Looks like more details of you and your Esprit (good choice) here;

Thanks,
I was going to recommend Lotusbuzz to avoid a duplication of effort on my part. I'm just too lazy to do it again. Plus there are photos from the 79Cannonball there.

Enjoy,

Wow. Just read the whole of the lotusbuzz threat - absolutely fantastic.

I feel a certain affinity given that I also made some significant financial sacrifices as a younger man to run an esprit (that nearly bankrupted me!). Some stuff in my profile on this..

I know a guy *cough* who drove from Beckton (London) to Newcastle in bang on 3 hours which by my maths is an average of 100mph. That must be some sort of Cannonball worthy statistic?
I erm, <ahem>, may or may not know someone who drove from Wing in Buckinghamshire to an undisclosed location in Fife, (which is allegedly 400 miles on the nose), in four hours dead having had to stop twice for fuel.

I'm reliably informed that said person won't be trying to 'better' that.

Back in the early 70's, my old man had a Mk10 that was his pride and joy. I remember him doing the same journey you've just said in a similar time.

As a schol kid I remember trying to work out how fast he went - he just smiled and said "well put it this way - it drank both tanks dry laugh

IIRC he had a couple of friends with him from The Hadrian's Motor Club (is it still going?) no doubt they were egging him on a bit - he was never afraid to open it up. cool

Speaking of endurance times, how's Salzburg to calais in a Jag 3.2 sovereign in 11 hours. Gps verified on my Pogo drive :-) that was a good weekend at Frequency.

I think the average speed for my aforementioned cross France jaunt, including 3 fuel stops and tolls, was actually just fractionally under 108mph.

If anyone wants to try and beat that, bon chance!

I always felt the film the "Gumball Rally" from 1976 was the most accurate incarnation of the Cannonball. It even had a Daytona in it.

It's a real shame it cannot be undertaken any more.
Except it had a car bombed in it, not that accurate then??
Erm, the Acme van drove into a fireworks factory and then got set on fire by a random cigarette, is that you mean?
Gumball Rally / Gumball Run, have i got the right film? a car had a bomb planted on it that exploded at a certain speed, it was a yellow sportscar.
No, you're thinking of this one http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cannonball_(film) where the german in the Pantera fell foul of the mafia & Sly.

The Gumball Rally is a different film. I've never seen "Cannonball" but it definitely sounds more Death Race 2000 than the Gumball Rally.

The reason I think that (excluding artistic licence) that it is more in keeping than the actual Cannonball Run is:

1) It has a lower number of participants - I think 12 cars start it or 11 and a bike.
2) There is a truck which has large petrol tanks on it.
3) Cobra versus Daytona - nice race off.
4) A lot of the driving "appears" to be done by the actors themselves.
5) 70's soundtrack which adds to the vibe.

The case for the defence rests.

Funny how the words Lotus and Bankrupt keep appearing together throughout history.

It was indeed, it was a Yellow Pantera that had to drive above a certain speed to stop the bomb exploding, which it failed to do!

It was the original film Cannonball, with Caradine and was also called carquake. It's a good film, certainly in the same vein as Gumball and a lot more serious than the latter Cannonball's with Burt Reynolds and I believe Roger Moore..

Gumball more serious than Cannonball!!

Yes, playing Roger Moore or was it Seymour Goldfarb who just thinks he Roger Moore. Funny he is the only James Bond never to drive an Aston Martin on screen as Bond. He was not in the second film as he make another film.

How many of you notice that most of the bit part actors from this turn up in Smokey and the Bandit part 2 (Smokey and the Bandit ride again). A black Trans Am turns up at the end with an actor in the bandit jacket. Where they shot back to back (at the same time)?

AS to modern race closest to the Cannonball try the Mexican Panamericana. Normally for classic cars, but the top class is closer to a road going NAS car than a classic. All car must by base on one in production in 1958 I think, but check that. This is run on semi-closed road.

That's a good story, but very badly written. Still, i'll buy Alex's book to see what he says about it all. I'd like to do something similar, but on a more British scale. John O'groats to Lands End in one day, perhaps. Or even just getting through the M6/M5 junction without having to leave 5th gear for a change.
I think a west east run under the cover of night could be doable.

I'm currently reading Brock Yates' book on the cannonball.

After having read Alex Roy's The Driver which referenced the above book.

Both great reads for any petrol head.

I don't think this would be aloud as a race! There is already a the Land’s End to John O’Groats Reliability Trial, held in December since 1908. This not a race!

I understand soon after it open people attempted laps of the M25. I believed this was an urban myths until I heard a BBC radio 4 program about it. A race was planed, the person behind this was "charged", unclear what will. You would face the same problem with your plans. Racing on the open road in main land Britain is illegal!! Gumball car have been stop in Kent just "for being in a race". Famously a few year ago at the Black Prince interchange on the A2/M2, about half the field was held for a number of hours. As there paper work was check, all mist the ferry to France. I know this as I was there.

Totally agree but still don't understand the references to the Rendevous videos in Alex's book, was it just a spin? That book actually cost me £9000, and since reading it four years ago have still got the 2001 Lemans blue M5 in the driveway.

John if you read this again, what's the story behind the Hawaian Tropic and coppertone? Watching the film it looks to be sponsored by Hawaian Tropic once you notice it, but the book says the Lamborghini is owned by the Coppertone chap?
Now sitting watching the movie, enjoying it even more since the book. Boring the hell out of my other half pointing out references to the original characters. smile

Check my garage too....

I believe it was just a reference to the ability to drive quickly and safely, with no regard to the law. That led to the drive in Manhattan and then the rest followed.
