want to buy a Glanza V
Discussion
Hey guys new to the site but been looking at Glanzas on here and have made my mind up that i want 1 so any info on them would be good and what sort of price will u pay for a decent 1 thats already over here and has all the mods that makes it to 200bhp up-words and looks the part and handles well
Thanks
Thanks
Glanzas with 200bhp tend to be owned by enthusiasts who have spent thousands getting them to that stage, so command a premium of £4500-£6000 when they come to sell.
I would buy an Impreza or Evo at that price, and if insurance is an issue you wont get insured on a Glanza import thats been modified that much to make over200BHP and suspension/ brake modifications.
I paid £3000 and £3200 for mine back in 2008, both black manual and pretty much standard which I imported myself.Although 1 was lowered slightly and had a Recaro seat (yes just one!) one had 30k miles the other 60k miles. Prices havnt changed in 3 years, I sold mine for what I paid after I was bored about 6 months later.
The interiors are cheap, but they are quite fun upto about 80mph.

I've always liked the look of the Starlet Glanzas (though I too would be apprehensive about owning a car named so closely to a glans). I expect with them being 90's Toyotas that they will be extremely good, and certainly class-topping cars. They look miles better than the competition of the time (Nova and Corsa GSI's etc etc). I'm sure I would enjoy owning one, the only concern I would have would be image. They look liike they would appeal to the sort of twits that think a Corsa with a big exhaust is a good thing and I expect it would get a lot of unwanted attention from that crowd.
Well I do have a 200bhp+ Glanza. I have a thread in readers cars about it if you want to have a read about the build, and yes it will cost lots of money to do what you said, but maybe not as much as some people think.
As a standard car they handle dreadfully, and the brakes are rubbish, but these can be fixed relatively easily, with aftermarket ARBs, anti-lift kit, and a decent set of coilovers correctly set up.
Mine runs perfectly reliably, no breakdowns so far, although my old CT9 was on the way out so I did a TD04 swap, which seems to be the easiest/cheapest and most reliable way to run 200bhp plus, as opposed to some foolish people turning the boost up to rediculous levels on CT9s, and then wondering why they fail or don't make the power output they expect it to.
Anyway I'm blabbering on a little bit now, but it is a very fun little car, and here is a picture of it:

I would recommend one with the ct9 hybrid turbo at around 185-200 bhp. The internals cope with that power fine and cars with the modified turbo are reasonably cheap to buy. Others have gone the larger turbo, forged internals route and some don't get much more power.
Keep watch of the classifies on the forum and good luck. Pretty reliable cars from my experience but check, suspension and turbo (puffs of blue smoke from back). Bell Direct were good for insurance on these when I was 19+

Have you considered something like a MR2 Turbo? Or even something n/a that isn't a hatchback? Lots of interesting sports cars, coupes and rag tops available at these sorts of prices.
I would have advised the same thing, so much car available for little money these days that you could get something far more interesting than a hatchback. Mind you, if he's struggling to insure a Civic Type R and other cars like that I suspect he can pretty much forget about things like MR2 Turbos etc etc. OTOH, I wouldn't have thought an imported turbo powered hatchback with loads of mods would be cheap to insure!OP, if you see blue smoke on start up I'd suspect gasket troubles. Whilst test driving you'll need to test the turbo to make sure it pulls strongly. Keep an eye on the rear view mirror whilst the turbo is working, if you see blue smoke under boost I'd walk away, as knackered turbos are never cheap fixes.
