So, my car is up for sale at £15k. Some guy texts me and says he's interested.
Apparently, he just sold his E92 M3 and needs something small. After about ten calls and texts between us, today he finally offered me... wait for it, £12k. Yes, £12k! rolleyes

I mean, seriously? My local dealer would take it for a fair bit more than that!

fking timewasters!

I'd say that's a reasonable starting bid myself.

Cars are not selling, I sold my car last had to drop price to far below what I expected, the market is very slow - very few buyers, buyers know they are in a strong position.

Even things like run of the mill spec Golfs and Mini's are difficult to sell.

If you put your car on at a low price for the current market people will still expect a large drop in price from you.

20% off does not sound too bad if you are looking at the alternative which is to keep buying more adverts and get no phone calls!

I don't mean to sound rude, but how is that "reasonable" when even my local dealer could offer me a fair bit higher than that?

Offers are always welcomed, but £12k is just taking the p*ss really!

Cars are selling. The right cars anyway.

20% off isn't a small margin off. If someone asked me for that off a car on ny forecourt, I'd be saying thanks, but no.

I don't see the problem, assuming it was a genuine and polite offer...

In 2008 when there was major 4x4 hatred, congestion charge was gonna be £25/day for big cars and parking was going to be based on CO2 levels as well as massive increases in tax, I had my 3 year old D3 up for sale at £13k and it was not moving. Dropped it to £11k and the phone didn't stop ringing.

Still hurts me today especially as the prices have firmed up a hell of a lot.

So, has your local dealer actually offered you more than £12,000?

Like Chicarito said, it's a starting bid, negotiate with the guy and see what happens!

You have to expect something off a private sale.
No one is going to pay the asking price unless its already far too cheap.
Certainly 10% off is reasonable to expect.
So asking 20% off to start with, (politely) is not that out of the question.

Let us know how long it takes to sell and how much you get for it when it does sell.

Go and have a look at how much you can buy things like Evo's and Impreza' STi's for at the moment, its incredbile. M3 are in a similar (but better) position, ie its an expensive to buy toy that costs a fortune to run and in todays economic climate not too many people are looking to buy these things!

seems like a reasonable starting bid.

you have priced it at what you think its worth, he has offered you what it is worth to him.

if its a game you don't want to play then go sell it to the dealer if they are offering a chunk more.

what car is it ?

OP, could you not politely say "sorry, that is too low for me. How near to £15k could you get?"

He may then say either a higher figure or tell you £12k is his max.

I think it's called negotiation. Not eactly rocket science... I find it strange you were so offended. If it's not the bid for you, don't take it.

Just hope for your sake you are not sitting there in the 'Dec/Jan-bad-weather-recession-coming-christmas-bills-to-pay-car-sales-death-zone' with your car reduced to a lower price looking back at the £12k and thinking "if I could get £13k for it now I would probably take it"...

I must admit, I always find these threads rather odd.

He doesn't know if you need shot asap/maybe that's his absolute max.

Someone once told me if you don't ask, you don't get. What's wrong with asking?

but would you? even for that once in a while car that you misjudged and just want rid of ?

im sure in most instances you would politely decline, but even if its rarely a yes, it means there is a chance for guys like this.

in the current market i would be the same

I read it that he was selling an M3 too, but the OP isn't. I still think 10% is s lot off a 15k car.

To get it for 14k would be a good deal, hitting the seller for more than a grand is just a bit harsh.

Well we traded in our JCW 2010 which we bought for £26K for £15K with a dealer so I would double check what a dealer is actually prepared to offer you on a Cooper S.
