I guess so, I was thinking that cars like the fiat 500 and ds3 might have become the default small "quality" choice. My mate had a load of suspension work done, and fixed a problem with his door - £2k ouch!

I've just negotiated £500 off a car - well chuffed with that.

Seeing as it was up for sale for £2k I thought I did very well smile

Thank god minis hold their value!
hehe
They used to hold up well, but now that every bubble has one the values have fallen pretty hard.

On a side note, our neighbour has just got a MINI 'coupe' — fk me it's the worst car I have ever seen! Shirley that will be a big loser...
That coupé thing is unforgivably ugly.

I think it'll drop like a stone.

When I sold my Lotus, I had a guy tell me that I had to take into account that he would be coming from the other end of the country, and this had to be reflected in the price. What a tt, like anyone gives a £1 per mile radius discount because he wants to travel 500 miles.

I read it that he was selling an M3 too, but the OP isn't. I still think 10% is s lot off a 15k car.

To get it for 14k would be a good deal, hitting the seller for more than a grand is just a bit harsh.
It's not about the actual amount off but the percentage that counts. I always make a first offer and expect to meet the seller half way. So 20% less with first offer and finish at 10% off asking price seems a reasonable haggling tactic from the buyer in my opinion.

Looking at Autotrader, the problem with the OP's price is that for £15k you can get a 2010 Cooper S from a mini dealer. One presumes for less than that with a cheeky offer...

At £15k, none of the cars at any of the main dealers is a facelifted model.

Yes, and it's not just one dealer. Three dealers that I've phoned up have offered me more than £12,000.
Sell it to one of them then....... That'll show him

Fair enough - I'm not familiar with the brand. What does the facelift give you on top of a pre-facelift car?

OP - 20% under asking as a starting bid is not unreasonable as an opening negotiation.

Selling a fairly generic car within 4-5 weeks of Xmas in a quasi-recession - it's not a scarce car - so 20% under *as an offer* with some haggle room is quite fair?

the problem is that 90% of people, including those looking to buy a cooper s, will not know the difference.

because of this, op will not get any more

I'd say that's a reasonable starting bid myself.
I don't mean to sound rude, but how is that "reasonable" when even my local dealer could offer me a fair bit higher than that?

Offers are always welcomed, but £12k is just taking the p*ss really!
But what HAS your local dealer offered you for a straight sale, not a px? Bottom line is, that's your bottom line. But until you get the offer, you wont know.
And your car is almost certainly worth less than you think it is!

So, has your local dealer actually offered you more than £12,000?

Like Chicarito said, it's a starting bid, negotiate with the guy and see what happens!

On the phone.....
take the car to them, let them look around it and make you an offer for a cash purchase.
Also, how do you know the guy offering you 12k is not a dealer himself? Seems odd that you would not be offended by a Mini dealer offering say 12k, but you are if someone else does.

Private buyers who are prepared to buy a car from a private seller for that sort of money are pretty thin on the ground!

Unless the main dealer is short on stock he's probably going to have your pants down too IMO

Sounds like a good starting offer to me, don't make the mistake I did and think there are plenty of people out there who will give you your asking price.

Unless and until it sells, ie someone actually hands over money that they are able and willing to part with, the car is worthless.

Another I have a car for sale thread!
Why dont you list it on a well known site.... errr this one.

We all now know you want between 12k-15k but nearer 15k would seal a quick deal.smile
