Hi

My insurance are insisting on a tracker for my new elise. Ive never had one before so dont really know how it works.

Is the best thing to do try to find someone local who can just fit it? Or do I order one online and fit it?

I dont really know anything at all about how to get this set up but its a bit urgent as im not covered for theft until its installed!!

Thanks in advance guys

Several companies that offer them and probably a dealer fit option as well. All need a device fitted to the car (hidden somewhere hard to get to so cost a fair bit to fit), and a contract for the yearly rental/connection. If you are planning to hold onto the car for a while it is worth getting the deals with 3 years contract paid or life time single owner contract paid. Check how much it will cost as there is no point paying £300 for a tracker and £150 a year for the connection if it only saves you £100 on insurance. Not a huge risk car so best advice might be to change insurers for one that doesn't mind it not having a tracker unless you live in a very dodgy area.

Theres virtually no crime where I live but the insurance policy is quite new so changing isnt an option.

Do you think its worth speaking to lotus then and see if they do a tracker option themselves?

If you wouldn't loose much canceling your insurance and taking up cover with someone else then you would probably be better off. Deactivated mine after the first year on my M3 and it only cost £50 more to insure so a lot less than having the tracker activation. Trackers also drain the battery, can cause alarm/locking/electrical issues, and mean you would be quite likely get your stolen car back.

If you really need one go with one of the Elise forum recommendations or a lotus approved.

I might actually give the local lotus dealership a call and see if they can recommend something directly

Just transferred a tacker that was on the Z06 I bought. It was a condition of the insurance as well. Lifetime cost me £332.50 plus vat so £399

Can't you cancel and take out a new policy elsewhere?

Any cancellation charge will be a lot cheaper than a new tracker.

Besides, most insurers (whether online, phone, comparison sites etc.) specify what security is needed at the quote stage.

Do NOT, I repeat DO NOT buy a RAC trackstar, mine failed twice and they would not admit to it.
Horrible people to talk too.

Bought another two trackers called SKYTAG. happy with them as you get a low battery warning email and a monthly report by email.

I've had a Tracker on the last 2 cars and have always dealt direct with them (www.tracker.com, other products are available, etc). Top notch installation, no fuss, no problems and they offer a lifetime subscription too on most products. Last time, there were quoting 7 - 10 days notice for an installation date.

Does it have to be Tracker/etc branded? Reason I ask is that I bought a £40 Hong Kong tracker from Evilbay which works when you send a text to the sim card which is in it, and it gives you the exact coordinates of the car (to within about 50cm!).

How safe are trackers, if you had a GPRS/Signal blocker for thirty quid, would that render it useless?

It must be cheaper to cancel insurance and go to a company who don't require a tracker?

£200ish for unit + fitting?
£300+ for lifetime use?

Then the batteries need changing every x years (I forget how many, maybe 5?).
