Helping a mate buy a car and we have just stumbled across one of these.

Now I now they aren't rated as the ultimate driving machine, and when new a lot of money at 50 odd grand, but with only 40k on the clock at £8k it seems like a lot of car for the money.

Anyone on here own/driven one?

They're cheap for a reason. Uncle had one for 6 months a few years ago driven it a couple times. Squidgy handling, surprisingly fidgety ride, hideous looks (IMO), and nasty interior. Engine seemed restrained too, although it was smooth amd gearbox was too. Offers neither performance, sports car handling or pose/bragging rights.
Avoid IMHO.

Never driven one, but general opinion seems to be: good engine, not much else.

Dead reliable, good engine but you are very isolated from everything - so an excellent grand tourer. But probably one of the ugliest cars on the road.
I'd go for a Merc SL instead. At least you can look at it without vomiting.
The previous owner of my Alpina chopped it in against an SC430 :shakesheadindisbelief:

They are cheap because most people hate the looks. As it happens, I think they look great, (I'm in a minority I know) and nearly bought one last summer. Might still do so in the future.

I was going to add on smooth roads and when just cruising they are fantastic. Thousands of them over in the USA where corners and B roads just don't exist. A great piece of Japanese engineering but not best suited to going fast nor for handling. Build quality 5*, reliability 5*, running costs not so good and driving fun a weak 2*. Too much power assisted everything and no feeling within the chassis nor steering. However for £ 8K if it has decent history why on earth not!!!!

The underpinnings are all LS430, not much if anything goes wrong the only slightly famous person I can think of who owns one is Mr Haynes (as in haynes manuals) . A bit of an ugly duckling & very colour dependant.

Lovely for wafting long distances in but no sports car

eww, awful colour.

Car that mate is looking at is black, one owner car with lexus stamps for every year of its life, and only 40k on the clock.

Small graze to wheel arch, service in a month or two and some wheel refurbishment are negotiating points.

Seems a lot of car for a little over 8k. Looks like a viewing is set for wed.

Can't think of a better value for money 2 seater cruiser out there.

Plenty enough go from the v8 (which is extremely quiet and rolls Royce smooth). Older cars have a rather naff 5 auto, new cars have a much better 6spd box. Ride is very gt, it really isn't a car you can fling round a b road, the run flats don't help.

Comes as standard with loads of gadgets including fantastic stereo.

Reliability wise the FIL has done countless trips across Europe in the couple he has had and it's not missed a single beat, however there is the potential for massive bills if the roof was to break or something.

Expect 23-26mpg.

Personally I think it's a very nice place to be on a long journey aslong as I'm not paying the fuel bill.

They were featured in EVO magazine's "10 worst cars ever" list, and the guy who drove it said it was so bad it was something he never wanted to experience again.

I purchased one for the summer and my mum nicked it within day's . It's a great car that would never need anything . Acceleration wise on par with a ffrs , handling not so good . Just changed all pads discs for 220 quid

Think 8k is a bit too much unless it's an 04 car with the better alloys

I think this is unfair. Coming out of a sl55 you'd say the sc is awful. But coming out of most other cars on the road you'd think this is brilliant.

Also op I had one for a week, I'm not judging from a magazine article.
