I just did two brim to brim fill ups on the Mercedes 400 E (4.2 litre 32 valve 275 bhp V8 with variable cam phasing). One was in traffic during 1 weeks motoring, highway but congested- commute to work. That got 15.5 mpg (US) and this week it got 16.5 mpg (US).
I make that 18.5 mpg (UK) and 19.8 mpg (UK)respectively. The 19.8 was driven alot more sedately however it involved alot of idling during engine diagnostic work. This figures will almost certainly be improved upon.
We can summarise from this that Mr Gear is a complete bell-end and needs to STFU. His only interest is to derride anything with a decent engine and would love nothing better than if all of our choices were restricted to electrical appliances.
Congratulations! 19mpg! clap That is the perfect reposte to the original poster who was looking for 30mpg. Give yourself a pat on the back before they come and put your straight-jacket back on.

I think the target should be around the 30mpg. 20 is too low for my pockets!

For a petrol, I'd say that a Jag XJ8 3.5l is pretty good, 36 mpg "on a run" and 26.5 mpg combined (so a touch over 30 and 20 in the real world then).

I'd like to +1 that as I'm sure many would.

Telling me to shut up because you don't like what I am saying is not the same as winning the argument. If you want to get in bed with Marquis Rex, you'd better get used to losing lots of arguments. smile

Having read this thread I'll +1 it also. I am wondering why someone with such a hatred of big engines is on PH to be honest. As Al Murray likes to point out, the human race is a contradiction.....

I don't hate big engines at all. How could you like drag racing and hate big engines?

As I have repeatedly stated in this thread, I am merely pointing out that the original poster asked for some specific criteria:

Over 30mpg and not a diesel were two of them. Am I the only person who has actually read the original post?

Because so far we have only had excuses and stuff so far wide of the mark it's a joke. 300bhp/ton and Marquis Rex having a tantrum was almost inevitable, but why do I find myself as being almost the only person who will happily state that respectable mpg and V8s are not a likely partnership?

Nothing wrong with that - V8s are great fun. Just don't kid yourself that you'll ever get respectable MPG without some sort of caveat attached.

Name-calling is easy, but actually having the debate seems so much more difficult for you.

17-20mpg in my 50,000-mile-from-new '93 3.5 V8 Discovery. But it only cost me £700 to buy 9 months ago and is easily worth twice that now after a good service, MOT and a polish. The fuel consumption, by comparison, isn't really an issue.

18mpg mixed to and from work in our E55 with 27mpg easily achievable on a longish motorway run.

I don't have a problem with any of those figures, which is why both cars are used pretty much every day. The Discovery burbles away merrily all the time and the E55 is the iron fist in a velvet glove. The fuel costs are worth the benefits.

The real argument in that case is: Does the OP mean "respectable mpg with no caveats attached" or "respectable mpg... for a V8"?

If it's the latter, the 30mpg is indeed impressive.

4.2 V8 Audi, 85 MPH cruise from the deep south (Hampshire) to up noooorf wey hey (Newcastle), 85 MPH cruise control on, with a few short burst to overtake. I did a little driving around in Newcastle and back, 700 ish mile round trip, average just over 30 MPG calculated, 31.5 on the OBC. I was pretty impressed considering the age and size of the barge.

Town driving will get you 17 MPG though. smile

I think we will both be ignored - or be labelled as pussies for ploding around in a V8 and not using all of the avaliable bhp for 100% of the time.

I did a similar trip to Hexham, near newcastle about a month ago, about 650 round trip from West London. Got an average 35mpg... in a very loaded up E60 530d....!!!!!

Not a massive difference considering... (the Camaro would've likely used twice the fuel thoughbiggrin)

Cruising my 645 got around 31-32(brim to brim - trip would have shown 33 or so) at 80.

In town it was 19.

Respectable as many got bored of explaining to you on page 1 is all about perspective, or caveats as you are now calling them rolleyes

For example 60mpg can be perceived as appalling, dependant upon the criterion it is being assessed under. So it's not name calling it just a total failure on your part to consider common sense and your blatant disregard for not accepting that not a single person in this thread agreeing with you while in the region of 10+ people have clearly explained why they don't - which you then ignore and carry on regardless.

Ah, so you actually agree with me then?

You should have explained yourself more clearly then instead of busting a blood vessel.

Good grief - at £1.39 per litre and with a driveway no longer than 3 cars including the garage space (which appears to be occupied with a rusty Opel) so just two car spaces then - I'm lucky if I hit 5mph wink
