I sold my VW Golf TDi about 6 weeks ago. It had been hit by a tree and I could afford to repair it. The insurance never paid out (not covered) so I sold it privately.

The buyer has now come back to me complaining the car is now a Cat C. I've told him its nothing to do with me - why would I have it declared even if I could?

Who gets cars declared as Cat D/C etc? I assumed it was insurance companies.....

You sold it damaged?

Insurance companies declare cars as write offs, but only after a payout and claim. If you've not claimed, it won't be recorded. Tell him to FRO

It might have been Cat C when you bought it!

I assume you are 100% confident it wasn't given a Cat C BEFORE you bought it?

Might be worthwhile asking a friendly PH'er with access to a free or cheap HPI check if it is showing up with a category marker and take it from there. MAY be a simple data entry error somewhere and a GTI with one digit difference from your reg. plate is showing as clear when it should have had the category marker.

My guess too.
I'm more concerned with this tree that managed to hit your car though!

Did the buyer specifically ask you if it was CAT [anything]?

If not I would forget it. Why worry about it.

Was the tree not insured?

Maybe it's the tree's insurers that have proclaimed the Cat C?

I think a tree fell on it IIRC. He's posted pics of it on here somewhere.

Or OP could do it them selves for £6-£10?

Basic ones are even cheaper.

Did an insurer inspect it?
They may have classified it without you knowing

Definitely not - I checked before I bought it.

Nope - only involvement the insurance company had was to basically tell me to FRO when I rang up to see if I was covered. I rang them up to check and they confirmed they hadnt done anything like it.

The buyer is threatening "legal action" and/or to "sort this out personally"......very odd...
