Has anybody got remote start fitted for the winter months?
I had it fitted to my Cav Turbo a few years ago but that was part of the alarm system, I am thinking about getting it done, but just want a stand alone system - I believe Clifford do the 1.2 remote start stand alone but is there anymore out there that you are aware of?

We had it on a Focus last winter was such a good thing to have a nice warm and defrosted car with hot seats.
You look out the window in the morning, press the buttons on the key fob, the car starts itself, but remains locked, puts its lights on and warms up nicely while you get ready to leave.
It was a Toad system and worked very well.

I've got it on my Clifford, however it can technically void your insurance when activated as they say the car can be started without the keys. Yes that's correct but where is the fob kept? That's right it on my keys!!!!
- *eta*** it is sooo handy for defrosting the car, or in the summer to cool it down before you get in. I never use mine now as I have a garage.

Like the new Disco 4. It has a Webasto diesel heater so the engine is never started from cold.
I found out it was even an option on the diesel Octavia, although not in this country. You could set a timer so it would start automatically each morning, or you could start it with the fob from inside. Must be soooo nice to get in a nice warm car with heated seats and a pre-defrosted window. Also, the heating system must heat the engine coolant, which heats the engine, so you're never starting a cold engine. Nice.

Afaik it's illegal to leave a car running unattended. Insurance might be a bit iffy too - I believe some cheapo remote start systems require the immobiliser to be tricked into believing the key is in the ignition by having the chip from the key close to the barrel!
That being said I've got remote start on my Type-R and it was fantastic last winter for the reasons already stated.
edit: Definitely illegal according to Regulation 98 ad Regulation 107 of the The Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986.
edit 2: Having said the above it seems there are exclusions for leaving cars unattended and running (or automation thereof) for the purposes of keeping a battery charged, etc. So maybe it is a grey area after all.

I made my own remote start system out of a few relays and a RC transmitter/receiver back in the '80's. Just had to remember to check it was out of gear, as I didn't bother with any safety lock-outs.

Most Intelistart systems you have to activate with engine running and the doors locked,thus the car wont be left running in gear.On mine as soon as you open the doors with remote you have 30 seconds to put key into ignition and turn to on position, as well as hitting brake pedal other wise engine will just stop.If you break into car with engine running and no key into ignition the car will stop and activate immobiliser if you dont hit brake pedal before pulling away engine will again stop.I should add that mines a Clifford alarm immobiliser really reliable and only ever gone off once when the house we lived in had the garage next to the kitchen,when ever the microwave was used with kitchen/garage door open alarm would activate.
Forget the law, they are just silly to retro-fit i think.
If you have a new range rover then a pre-warmer can be selected as an option, but then you're talking about a car worth upward of £70k.
A friend fitted a remote started to his Mk1 Focus RS a few years back, but as it was a faily basic kit it failed to recognise when the car was IN GEAR !

It goes without saying you dont leave the car in gear when you park up if you plan to use the remote start in the morning.Only a complete retard would be stupid enough to fit a remote start and then use it unless left in neutral.
