its not illegal if your car is not on the public roads

I'm also not sure its illegal if it is on public roads. a lot of refrigerated lorries start themselves when they feel like it - surely if you can't drive off (as there's no key) its not 'quitting'?
That will be the fridge firing up not the lorry engine itself.

I have always wanted one but just for a gadget only as if I wanted it to warm my Defender up, I would have to leave it on for about 2 hours and twenty mins before hand.biggrin

A friend fitted a remote started to his Mk1 Focus RS a few years back, but as it was a faily basic kit it failed to recognise when the car was IN GEAR !
It goes without saying you dont leave the car in gear when you park up if you plan to use the remote start in the morning.

Only a complete retart would be stupid enough to fit a remote start and then use it unless left in neutral.
Wathing one of those 24 hours in A&E type programmes a year or so back there was a chap in there with 2 broken legs from using his remote start on his van, which he had left in gear, as he walked infront of it.

Sort of puts you off when you've been leaving your car in gear since the day you first drove.

Neighbour had one on his X5 and loved it.

In some parts of the country it's illegal under anti-pollution laws to leave an engine running while parked for more than a couple of minutes. Punishable with a fixed penalty.

That would come under the exception in Regulation 98 Part 2 (b), "where the machinery is required to be worked for a purpose other than driving the vehicle", and possibly 107 Part 2 (b) (i).

If you have your remote start on to heat the cabin, then that may be a "purpose other than driving the vehicle", in which case you're fine legally.

Spend £350 on one of these http://www.kenlowe.com/pre-heaters/cars/automatic....

A kenlowe preheater, a brilliant piece of kit

Plug you car into the mains via a timer and about an hour or two before you are due to leave the heater starts up and starts to pump hot water around the engine meaning it starts instantly and the windows are also defrosted.

You walk out and unplug the car and off you trot.

With the added bonus of you take the cable with you and some places offer dedicated spaces for electric cars where you can plug the landrover in and tell everyone its electric
