Why did you run the engine when you knew you had done that?

yes I have enough trouble finding the tube to get the dipstick back in after checking the oil. Poses the question, what were you doing with the dipstick out and messing around with nuts?

This!!!

Good luck with the engine re-build, have you found the nut yet??

Although, how did an 8mm nut cause your bearings to fail, the oil pickup from the sump surely has a mesh filter on it so the nut would just be rattling in the sump??!!

ETA: Interesting first post after 7 months of lurking??!!

much more fun to mess with your nuts when your dipstick is out!

Open topped sump which bolts to the bottom of the crankcase, surely?

oil pressure is surprisingly high in engines- it doesnt just slosh about in the bottom of the sump. It can easily be 3 bar (about 40psi) which migt be enough to whip the nut up and into a gap between bearing and crank.

As others have saiud, to start and engine knowing there is a foreign body in the oil can oply lead one way, I'm afriad

I done something similar fitting a catch tank once. Was using some very small nuts and bolts and thought everything was fine. Started the car at least once and everything was okay, pat on the back for me, job well done. Start the car again, CLACK CLACK CLACK CLACK CLACK!

even for a mechanical numpty like me, I knew that wasn't right. Phoned my mate up who works on my car, started it up with him listening. As soon as he hears it he's shouting turn it off, turn it off!

Get the car towed up to him for him to strip it down, finds a crushed bolt and some other bit in the engine. From what I remember him telling me the pistons were thankfully okay, some scratches I think on the wall which were honed or something? Dunno.

End result was as the engine was open he ported my head which gave good gains so moral of the story is, if you have a mate that knows what he's doing, drop a bolt in the engine!

Edited to add. It was a crushed nut, not a bolt duuuh

would you not already have some issues if theres a 8mm gap between the bearing and crank?

I assume the OP referred to the AF size of the nut saying it's 8mm.

Can you please leave the technical talk to the grown ups please. laugh

In fact I would question if an 8mm nut in the sump would knacker the shells like the OPs pics at all. More likely that the shell itself failed, and it "spun" it. And you wouldn't necessarily need a new lump. Crank would need a regrind and oversize shells.
