Car insurance - am I going wrong somewhere?

I work at an insurance brokers and the risk is calculated mainly on the driver, the car only plays one part in the premium calculation (if you have 5 years NCB and over 25 you could find the difference between a small hatchback and a 911 is only £100-200).

Things that can make similar differences to the final cost are- Is your vehicle stored at night in a locked garage? Have you bought a car with a tracker? Have you got a low or high risk occupation? etc.

Quite possibly, but as a slightly less extreme example, I'm a bit younger than the OP and in the same situation (except I have a garage, but looking at quotes that makes no difference) and I insured my Elise for about 500 quid last year, and that's with a fault accident against my name and only 3 years' NCB.

ETA: I do live in a group-A insurance zone though, by the above table.

Do remember though that just because it says your area is a safe postcode doesn't mean your insurer will think the same.
Use it as a guide (similar to the insurance grouping for cars) rather than think it's 100% accurate.

31 here and its only the last couple of years my premium has gone down to sensible levels. £600 for tvr tuscan and £400 for a sprinter van. I am a block paver which it appears makes it more expensive?

Girlfriend who was an underwriting assistant and now an underwriter (shipping) has just insured a clk 350 for £600 fully comp with me as a named driver.

We live in an insurance A area (which i only just found out thanks to the above post).

I do agree though these figures are impossible.

That insurance postcode list makes interesting reading. Areas that are thought of as "posh" are in E's and F's. Where I live is a better rating than were my parents live even though the average house price in their area is about 5 times that of mine.

Why should posher or richer mean lower insurance risk? If nothing else if you do crash into something in a rich area, it's likely to be something more expensive to repair.

More nice cars to nick I suppose. My postcode is C on that list. So fairly middle of the road in terms of risk as I thought.

One advantage in being an old duffer.

Chatting about this with my Dad last weekend when my niece was badgering my sister to insure her on her Corsa so she could practice driving.

Sister got a quote for a silly amount extra to put her on the insurance, I think it was over £300. My sister insurance is only about £250!

I asked my Dad how much it was to put me and my sister on his insurance when we were learning to drive. This was 1981-1983 ish on a Marina 1.8 TC (oh yeh...).

"Just a £10 admin fee" he replied

"You're kidding right?!?"

"No" he said.

And even when we both had passed our tests it was only an extra £20 each!

He had also "upgraded" to a MK1 Cavalier 2.0 GLS by then!

I can almost see the youngsters crying onto their keyboards!

I am 20 with 0ncb and can insure a mk1 Leon Cupra R 225bhp for £1500 at my home address - if I switch it to my Uni address in Southampton it goes up to £3500+....

I find, consistently, every year that Admiral group (Currently with Bell) are BY FAR the cheapest insurers for me, have been for several years.

Having just looked at the table I am in a Group E * area, which is slightly upsetting given how close to the border I am!

I'm 24, passed 7years. And when learning, I bought a little mk3 fiesta, mum insured it, and named me on it to learn. So she could take me out all over Lincs to get experience.

And IIRC that was £350 or £400 a year for her, as she'd no NCB due to years on my dads policy, and adding me to learn was £50 and £45 admin fee or something.

Seems laughable.

Even when I passed my test, the next 10months on that policy cost £19.99 for a "notification of change" and that was it.


Even I feel sorry for kids like the OHs 19year old brother, he's learning, and due to insurance is only able to use instructors car.

His parents just cant afford the £1500 extra to put him on their 1400cc 2004 VW POLO.

Luckily we have some private land nearby, old run-way etc, so gonna take him there in the Alfa for a bit of experience......As his instuctor has just changed from a derv 500 to a petrol stop-start 500 and he's struggling.
