Just renewed my insurance and was asked whether I'd tinted the windows. I hadn't but am considering it, so also asked for an exact same quote with the only difference being that I'd tinted the windows...

Well, insurance is £340 odd fully comp on a disco 3, window tinting would have bumped it up by another £110! yikes

All I wanted to do was make it more secure if I had some mountain bikes in it. Why should it make such a difference??

Why would they ask you, if you had tinted the windows?

More likely to get broken into as you may have something attractive kept in it ... Not sure what you may want to hide hypothetically say some mountain bikes!

ive found with window tints visibility is almost non existant at night, which increases risk of hitting parked cars probably

Only if you're a bell and have the front windows tinted too.

It was the standard.. "Have you had any modifications such as alloy wheels, stereo, window tinting, spoilers, ejector seats, blah-de-blah" line

There is that, but as far as I can tell most people just want to tint as they may look better. Crikey, plenty of subaru estates, S-maxes (x-pack) etc have them tinted from the factory.

Might have expected it to up by a tenner*, but up it by a third?!

* Me: oh by the way I farted in my car last night..
Insurer: OK, that's another tenner

How does that work? Never had a problem with mine. In fact it cut down glare more on country roads from cars behind so Id say it improved visability.

I also use my mirrors, odd I know but since they are there...

Anything bumps up insurance.

I'm surprised going to the toilet before getting into the car in the morning doesn't increase the premium due to it being a weight saving modification.....

I suspect it was the only mod you would have had? If so, then clearly someone who "mods" their car is much more likely to crash? I suspect any further mods after the first wont incur such steep rises!

Also mods depend on insurer.

A mainstream insurer will run a mile if they hear a modification.

Specialist insurers wouldn't bat an eyelid at tints, and worst case scenario would be an admin fee.

I bet you're with direct line or someone equally "mainstream"
