if they want a sports car to sit 'below' the gt86 in terms of price, it won't be mid engined - i'd expect something more similar to the honda crz based on the new prius 'c' chassis/drivetrain
Well a transverse mid-engined car can at least use large chunks of the drive-line, subframe and suspension from a normal FWD hatch, which should keep development costs down a bit compared to a front engined RWD car.

Happy days indeed. If they can produce a line up of the quality they used to have then that's reason to rejoice in my book.

I think you can kiss goodbye to the soft flowing lines of the old cars. The new ones will most likely be all angular, lumpy, and ugly. Just like their new effort.
Soft flowing lines?

Considering how practical the Mk2 was, the lack of storage space for anything more than a tooth brush seemed to be a major oversight on the Mk3!
It depends, are you buying it to drive or to go shoe shopping? :-p

(actually the two storage cubbies are surprisingly large, just about big enough for the weekly shop)

anything fast

i wish they could just modernise the supra under the skin and just sell it looking like exactly as it did...

that would be fantastic, just make it a little lighter...

true, but probably not enough so to make it significantly cheaper (say 20%) than the gt86. the last mr2 was about the price of a well specced hot hatch, which is lets say 24k today?

T'was a superb boot, considering the engine was back there too!

Superb news. My tubby was one of the most fun cars I've driven.
frown The only downside of the turbocharged MR2 was that some people felt it necessary to call them "tubby". Grown up people, not 4 year olds.

Surely this negates the need for the GT 86 though. If you want a light nimble sports car you would go for the MR2 and if you wanted more power/space you would have the Supra.
What if you want something nimbler than a Supra but with more space than an MR2...? jester

The Mk3 had very poor boot space in comparison to the Mk2 though.

I'll look forward to buy one of each when they reach a the second hand market smile... Really should have just got on and called the FT-86 a Celica and be done with it.

I think it's a great thing. Perhaps it might wake Honda up as well into producing some non white goods cars for the next century??

Well for about 3 years in the mid 80s they did the AE86 rwd Corolla coupe alongside the MK1 MR2 and the fwd Corolla GT - all used the same engine.

I read an article comparing the handling etc of all 3 and they said at the time that the MR2 outsold the AE86 by about 2 to 1.
Some people will always like to have the rear seats/hatch though

If this true (and not just some pipe dream) then I think that calls for a:

WOO

shortly followed by a:

HOO!
