I like Toyota's new MD, he's proving that he is the petrol head he claims to be.
I just hope he becomes close enough friends with Ulrich Bez to decide to invest a massive chunk of money into Aston Martin...

Interesting reading!

MK2 MR2 consistently quicker than the Mk3 at successive race meetings.

Sorts that theory out.......

As for the MR2 / Supra renaissance - I will believe that when I see it. I think the massively disappointing (looking) '86 is the only sports model we will see.

What theory? I don't think anyone ever claimed that the mk3 was a faster car.

I think sub-25k is probably realistic as long as they get the design right and don't go for silly power. Probably not much sub-25k, though.

No, it's a greenwashing exercise.

So the '86 has a 200bhp boxer4 and low grip/neutral handling at 28k pounds....give the Supra a 300bhp boxer6 and similar handling for 35k pounds. Aim to give the mr2 a basic 150bhp i4 for 16k pounds.

What was the list price on the Mk3 MR2? Pretty sure it was comfortably sub 25k.

16k? You can only just buy an Auris for that. My guess would be something like 23k as a starting point.

They started at about 18k, I think, but the mk3 was released 11 years ago! There's been a fair bit of inflation since then - if we assume 3% inflation PA, that would be almost exactly 25k today.

It is ambitious, but it should be as basic as a low spec Yaris and shouldn't cost more than 50% more.

Ambitious isn't the word I'd use - there is no way that Toyota could produce a new MR2 for under 20k and still make a profit on it.

Have a read back through the comments - 'MK3 is faster than the MK2 where it needs to be'. Well if it loses in a race then it obviously isn't fast enough where it needs to be.....

Oh sorry, I missed that.

It doesn't change the fact that the mk3 is a vastly better car though, IMO.

MR2 MKI Supercharged - Performance 7/10, Style = 7/10, Go Kart for adults!

MR2 MKII Turbo - Performance 9/10, Style 9/10, God-like - closest you'll get to a supercar for under £30k (new)

MR2 MKIII (any model) - Performance 1/10, Style 1/10, Lost the plot entirely, no point having good handling if you're accelerating like a turtle in a tar pit - feeble pile of poo!

Toyota, please please please do an updated MKII Turbo!!! When a car looks this good, they don't even need to update the chassis, or the interior, or the engine, or anything! Love that car!

confused I suppose that was meant to be a joke, but I'm afraid I don't understand it. What has a racing series got to do with which is the better road car?
