Long lasting "bulletproof" cars?
Discussion
Passat, early Octavia etc 1.9 tdis definately have a bulletproof image.
Good point on the D5 engine of Volvos. I am always worried about common rail reliability but there seems to be loads of D5s out there with big mileages.
Which current new cars are hewn from granite though? Can you imagine how long these stop start, diesel particulate cars are going to last?
Re: the RX8 is that the "with hindsight" worst car of the last 10 years?

1997 peugeot 406 2.1td
Been in our family from new, its now used as mine and my dads shed and has done just over 260k, in that time its had nothing but consumambles, a clutch and some new sills, we both neglect it, its been loaded up to the roof many many times and it just keeps going, we both reckon we can get it to 500k easily.

Rover 618i, had two. Both took a right pasting. First one used by my dad as a taxi, then passed to me and only silly stuff like the window jumping off the runners and rear bulbs blowing all the time. Hardly ever serviced on time, the engine/gearbox/clutch were all going strong 170k+ miles. Back then got loads of comments on how nice the interior was. Much nicer place to sit than the equivelent mondeo etc at the time, felt a quality product.
Unispiring to drive but bulletproof, shame their bangers now.

Mid Nineties Nissan - Micra, Almera, Sunny, Primera etc.
My uncle had a Sunny Estate (seriously) 1.6, thrashed the nuts off it and nothing ever went wrong. Very practical run about and a brilliant little engine.
I think Nissan missed a trick by not putting that 1600 in the Micra coupled with some better steering.

No, that would be unduly harsh. They are definitely a trap for the unwary and a car to buy with your eyes open, though. A bargain for a knowledgeable enthusiast, but not one I would recommend to my mum.FrankNBeans said:
The wife's Dci Laguna II is going strong and really neglected!
French cars really do seem to be one extreme or the other, even on the same model! For every (using your example) Laguna that's a never-ending ststream of problems in all manner of shapes and sizes, there's another one doing a million miles a month without oil. MIL's 97 Megane is the same, thrives on neglect. 140k, in the last 50odd-thousand it's had one oil change and a top up. Most problems have been exhaust related and to be honest, made ten times worse by a well known fast-fit chain of garages.Fire99 said:
V8's and later 6's can be a little fragile.
Suspension can need decent money spent now.
Hmmm...a decent E34 with an M30 (6cyl 12v) M50 (6cyl, 24v) or M60 (V8) can easily manage 400,000 miles...I know of several with that mileage on them...Suspension can need decent money spent now.
Saloons have entirely conventional suspension and the only possible weak point is the late model 540's 6-speed 'box. The Nikisil issue on M60s is over-hyped...most engines were replaced under warranty for Alusil versions and any Nikisil ones that survived to today are going to be fine...
Rust is much more likely to kill them then anything mechanical...
I would say my E39, the 523.
It has only needed consumables fixed other than the ABS unit replaced. Broke two springs on potholes but that can happen to any car. I drive it hard, had a welded diff in her, drive her across fields, dont service it as often as I should.
But I honestly cant say it is bulletproof yet, It just hasnt had the mileage on it to see how it goes at 205k miles.
Ask me in another 100k miles.

If you manage to keep the electrics working past 200K miles i'll be surprised. It has only needed consumables fixed other than the ABS unit replaced.
