Used Touaregs...

I'm looking for a nice winter car and am amazed how cheap the old petrol 3.2 V6 Touaregs are. I know the economy is crap, but they seem to be fairly reliable and very comfy - I've read alot about them on various forums (inc PH) but was just wondering if anyone had any advice on what to look for? I'm looking at sub £9k petrol models, with under 80k miles and decent service history!

We had one, fastish to 20mph, plan your overtakes and have deep pockets, ours never saw more than 21mpg on the motorway, gearbox had fits when coming off the motorway occasionally, sold it before it went bang, had a new propshaft (£700 ish) apart from that it was ok. some have horrendus tyre wear. Would not have another!

I'd go for an X5, and look for one on LPG. Our current LPG 545i costs about 11p/mile compared to my brothers Vectra 1.9CDTI at 13p/mile

Propshaft will go at some point. They can be overhauled now for £145.

Mine is a 2.5 TDI. 32mpg on the motorway. Done 120k now. Only issues so far are the aforementioned prop and the air flow meter which was £70 from a dealer. Very reliable car for us and I'd have another. Not had any issues with tyre wear. I use Goodyear tyres on it.

If you're willing to pay the fuel costs for a petrol SUV get a V8 Cayenne. They are cheap too, and the economy isn't much different.

Same model here with just over 100k. The prop bearings go anywhere from 60k onwards. Mine's just had the front wheel bearings done at 200 quid a side, other than that it has only had routine servicing/brakes/tyres since new.

From reading a fair bit when I was looking at buying, cars from the first year or so of production do seem to suffer from more issues than later ones. Front diff bearing failures for one.
