I cannot believe there is any left without massive great holes in the parcel shelf or great gaps in the front door cards where the speakers have been ripped out.
Also I am surprised that there is not a half a tonne of crap hanging of the front or back OR a badly done dimma kit or fake 1.9 badges.

I wonder if there are any 'rock' burns on the seats? As it seemed to be the car of choice for that certain party goer hehe

When they were unmolested they were a great car!

Many many years ago my second car at 18 was a 205 XS as i couldn't afford the insurance on the GTI, always yearned for the GTI in black though. Never drove the full fat version but I remember the XS handled pretty well

If any car is going to do a 'Escort Mk1 / Mk2' on us again re. future silly prices - its got to be these right?

ETA: By which I mean - one everyone has one... then they get the boyracer treatment... then they disappear.... then BOOM!! You all want one again but can't touch one for silly money! (and everyone gets a bit misty eyed about the one they used to own)

Why? I don't get the ditch bound reputation they have. Having owned 2 neither one has been as twitchy as reports from the motoring press would have you believe.
yes

Mine was fine too. Perhaps a little livelier than the usual FWD hatch, but the limits were pretty high - you'd struggle to provoke it without realising you were pressing on - and it was easy enough to catch. Maybe modern tyres had tamed it, but it certainly didn't seem like a widow maker.

Bargain. Someone buy it before I do. I've got a near mint 1.9 in my garage that I've owned for 15 years. Recently got it back on the road after 12 years in hibernation. Feels dated compared to my 330 ci sport but just as fast & SO much more fun. I'll never sell the Pug.

Slowly attempting to get a ropey 1.9 back into good condition at the moment. Funds being tight is slightly hampering this though. Great car nonetheless.

Al you need to do is try braking (perhaps even just backing off) when not in a straight line and you will see where the reputation comes from. One of only two car crashes I've had (in 25 years) was in a 1.9 GTi. Still, for all its faults (felt as substantial as tin-foil, buzzier than a chain-saw and build quality was er...80's French) I really loved it and was sad to see it go (but as it was being replaced by an Integrale the pain wasn't too bad!)

I think the alloys on the 1.9 still rank as some of my favourites ever. And I still think the car itself looks good.

I was fortunate enough to own two 1.6 gti's but both were money pits. Great fun though back then.

I had a mate back in the eighties who at 19 got one, he was a Chef and makign good money, battering the Overtime and got a very nice red 1.9, he had nice clothes, holiday and everything, living the eighties dream, he even drank Stella when it was still "Reassuringly Expensive", well he binned his onto its roof into a field and emerged relatively unscathed.

He got a decent insurance payout and bought another one and then a few months later binned that one in a very similar manner, he ended up with a 1.1 Fiesta after that.

I had an early, 105 bhp 1.6 briefly, well my dad bought it and I nearly had it but it was a bit limp after my mk1 Golf, dont think the engine was much good ont that one, the 1.9 was quite quick but I preffered my go in a R5 Turbo, totally standard 120 bhp one and that was the quickest feeling one I went in.

Buy it now, run it at weekends for a few years and then watch it go up in price like the Mk1 Golf GTI

I ran a 1.9 Pug 205 GTI as a work vehicle for a short while back when they were current. Every night I got home my Mum was relieved, as she thought I was going to kill myself in it. Much underestimated in my opinion, great little movers!

Ummmn, quite tempted by this for cheap thrills in an acceptable practical other half-friendly shape.

Owned two 1.9's in my car history. It was just the way they drove, the only way to describe is kart like. My brother owned a Renault cheeky turbo at the same time, always thought the Pug was a better drivers car..

If I found a decent one, I think I would...

Had both 1.6 and 1.9 and loved both. Cant agree with the 1.6 being better in anyway as the 1.9 is just so good. Either variant pretty much goads you into spanking it nearly all of the time. The 1.9 rewarded me for this behaviour with 9 points in one year! Somebody buy it and restore it to its former glory please.

That brings back some memories, there was a time when pretty much every modded car had TSW Blades.

I'd suggest that there's a good reason that the majority of these (old and newer) hot hatches are going cheap - especially in the current climate. If you're can't DIY, then you're probably in for some big bills: bodywork (inner sills), brake lines, rear beam, engine gaskets and seals, cam belt, radiator, etc. Add to that £215 pa tax and 20-30 mpg (97ron) and you get the picture. Even so I'd still be tempted by one. What else comes close for bang per buck??
