RIP Evo, all models were great to drive, not just the VI TME...

Being killed off by ridiculously high taxes imposed by money grabbing civil servants on the pretence that it's to save the environment, rising fuel prices because it costs more to gold plate your Veyron in Dubai these days, a weak pound because our government had to bail out the banks because all their Estonian school mates got greedy, and Euro regulations made by the same people who passed a law governing the shape of banana’s...it’s like a bad soap opera on acid

I hope the new breed of Euro rules compliant, electro/hybrid/vegetable oil powered cars will be as fun as the Evo and STI were, but I have my doubts frown
Damn those Estonians and their dodgy deals wink

I've always had a massive love for the IV TME since I saw it in the motor show brochure of the time. Yet to have a ride out in one yet, but someday <3

Can't see the problem. I'm glad they made them but ultimately, they were created and developed for a specific purpose - to win rallies. Without a suitable competitive environment to motivate further development, they may as well kill it off. Subaru should have done the same with their equivalent too.
I don't think you know what you are talking about...

The last generation Evo and STI are still very succesful rally cars, the hatch STI has won several championships this year including the 2011 FIA Production Car World Rally Championship. There are other rally championships other than the Ford/Citreon Rally, otherwise known as the WRC!

good point, but it's a shame we dont see 200+ bhp 4wd fiesta's or ds3's - on PH there is a market for it, but i read somewhere that the average mpg of new cars being sold is something like 52, so elsewhere there isnt a market for these cars
There isn't a market for those cars on here. Did you read the GT86 threads, everybody wants the car but only once it has depreciated to <£5k.

Another legend consigned to the history books, another nail in the coffin of enjoyable motoring. I couldn't give a toss what they replace it with, if it's not a 2.0L 4WD, turbo powered monster it doesn't deserve the Evo name.

I'm going to shoot myself in the foot, but just realised I've put IV not VI.

Where is that smiley with the coat when you need it ^^

evo was one of the best sportscars (excluding supercars) ever made. But the Evo X was a downfall from the 9.. however the 6 TME and 9 were my favorite models.

time to find garage space and get a couple of nice ones for ten years time.... money to be made me thinks! A good Evo be like a decent Cosworth now, don't bugger it about, keep it clean, and watch it become collectable! Mind you, adding to a 'fleet' of a 1989 Astra GTE 16v with 27,000 miles, 1996 Impreza STi V2 import (really clean and 8,000km from new!), Astra Turbo Coupe running 360bhp, a V6 auto Freelander and the wifes Kia, I might get divorced/shot if I buy anything else!!

I miss my Tommi edition... (goes to search classifieds....) biggrin

yes Enthusiast cars don't sell well unless they have mass market appeal or are very niche.

I'd love an evo x and would have bought one if it was just a tax band lower - silly reason, but that's how i roll

very sad news
you're kidding me? is it a company car or personal? if person, then you're not buying a car as it costs you 1-2 tanks of fuel extra per year.

that's absurd!
Agreed. If you want it that bad, get it and worry about costs later BUT not buying purely because of the tax band is crazy talk!

They may not be highly regarded on PH, but they deserve (along with Imprezas) to be remembered as legendary cars.

I was very close to buying an X 9 months ago and was a genuine toss up between a Z4M and a 300.

I love the look of these, i love the sound and loved the grown up interior.... however i didn't find it that fun considering how fast it was as it was too easy to get to urmm 70 (cough).

Also i reset the MPG reader and for the first 20 miles taking it easy (very easy) i saw 24 mpg then i put my foot down turned back to the dealers going into what can only be described as warp factor and turned out 13mpg over the same distance eek

But if you wanted to go to warp factor every drive and not worry about the conditions it's simply incredible sure footed and planted which is in complete contrast to the Z4M.... but for thats where the fun is because i want to have fun at 50 - 70 not 70 - 100+ mph

The only dealer in my county, namely Fife Mitsubishi, refused to service my car, "because I didn't buy it there"........ tumbleweed

Go figure!
I hope you told Mitsubishi UK Customer Services?
I'm sure that lady who was on "Undercover Boss" would love to hear your complaint!

Great cars, but through the Evo 7, 8 and 9 sales dwindled to almost nothing primarily due to co2 output and mpg. It was also withdrawn from the WRC in 2005 and never returned, as it could not compete with Citroen and Ford. Calling it a day for the Evo is the only sane business decision.

For me it would be the Evo 9 FQ360 ( not sure it fits in with the tight budget though)

0 - 62mph - 3.9 seconds
366BHP
363lb ft @ 3200rpm
I had a decent test drive of one of these (an MR) and it was utterly brilliant. Just a tad too impractical but I still might buy one at some stage.

Electric engines in the wheels? Great idea, but what about unsprung weight..., surely this would have a serious effect on road holding and suspension reaction?
This, I'm a huge fan of electric cars but in wheel motors for a performance car are a terrible idea.

Those bankers should fk off back to Estonia and take their imaginary bananas with 'em.

I don't know why LPGing cars like this isn't more popular.
2/3 running costs and really high RON meaning you can up the boost.

EU corporate average fleet CO2 limits start kick in from 2012, ramping up over the next three years. I'm not at all surprised the cull has started - all those people who think Toyota/Subaru are on the wrong lines with the modestly powered and relatively frugal GT86/BRZ will soon see the logic of that decision once the dinosaurs are all extinct.

I don't like it, I've never been offered the option to vote against it, but that's the way it is..

The Evo was really the only thing Mitsu had going for them ,IMO. The rest of their range can't compete with the other Jap manufacturers.

They're in danger of becoming just another Toyota/Honda.

Never been a fanboy, but you've gotta respect how capable Evos are! In the real world, they're quicker than many "supercars" with their 4WD grip. And that's before you start tuning them with the huge aftermarket support that's available.

I wouldn't be surprised if a good spec Evo, such as the Tommi Makinen edition, could well go up in value in the way Integrales have over the years....

That would be my choice of the bunch.

I drove one of those at a dealership maybe 8-9 years ago. Until then, the fastest car I'd driven was a Classic Impreza Turbo 2000. I was gobs jacked how it could accelerate off the mark and take corners. I think the salesman was too biggrin
