well you can buy an E46 M3 with 180+k on the clock for £5k so why would you buy a 31k E92 M3?

At least the R looks the part, however since it came about the GTi just looks bland by comparison. Dial in the fact of the £30k barrier breakage and that those wheels look like one seen on golfs from when the mk4 was new... maybe substance over style though as the 0-60 sprint time increase is pretty big considering the type and segment of the car.

Nah it's OK to compare new to second hand. I do it all the time when buying a car and I am still alive.
another point to not compare them is running costs. tyres for an E92 M3 from just about the cheapest place around (micheldever) are a shade over £300 per tyre on the back, and a shade under £300 per tyre on the front. i suspect more expensive than the golfs, and i reckon it'll get through them quicker. it takes 8-9 litres of very expensive oil, it has twice the spark plug count, everything is more expensive, fuel bills, insurance, servicing etc.

don't get me wrong, i wouldn't spend 30k on one of these, but likewise comparing them with something in a totally different market segment is a little off IMO. you can get some nice 2nd hand metal for 60k too which are better than RS4's and M3s, so why would anyone ever buy those? where does it stop? someone has to buy cars new, otherwise us lot won't ever get 2nd hand ones.

It's all a matter of perspective and depends where you draw the line. I purchased a Leon TDI with 45k at 3 yrs old for £8k. I considered that fair value. I could equally have spend that money on an E46 M3, but for me the running costs were the deciding factor, even though the Leon has continued to depreciate.

I couldn't stomach spending £31k on a golf, but i could stomach spending that much on something more iconic. For some people having a new car is more important than the depreciation. Horses for courses.

I love progress - describing a 50 profile tyre as soft & squidgy. Admitedly they look rubbish on the GTI with 17" wheels

Genrally speaking through a wide variety of makes & models 50 profile are the best profile for balance of cornering/handling and ride quality - higher lack feel & lower too hard a ride for everyday use.

IMO need to buck the trend for overly large wheel/low profile trend and get back to something more suitable for application.

Not bad Riggers, not bad at all! Think in this case I'd be willing to sacrifice performance for the larger (and substantially better looking) wheels. Who really wants grip in the snow anyway? Perhaps now you can tuck the Puma up before mother nature has her way with those wheel arches.

Compare it to a Megane 250 or even the 265, it's not that much more expensive. It's a much better product in terms of build quality and materials used, plus it's got all wheel drive. A GTI with a few options makes less sense imo.
I've had an edition 30 (perelli (er spelling)) and an evo X. evo x was in a different league.

in my opinion, of course.

I have the DSG in my Polo GTI, and I think that it's way more fun than a manual, but I do use the paddles the majority of the time.

Not feeling the matt black wrap, but with the change left over could get some decent wheels, some lowering springs an exhaust and turbo elbow to get 400 bhp and to 60mph in under 4 seconds without chipping the ecu and it leaves the engine warrantee intact...

Ok, not quite new but almost. And could probably get a brand new FQ360 for the price of the gti 35 these days?

Having had both, for me the Evo was a much nicer place to be in, if that's what you're after, and you can leave super cars in your wake, if that's your thrill.

They are also very exclusive, a golf is, well, just a golf.

What's a Golf gti got over an evo x? Speed? No. Handling? No. Equipment levels? No. Refinement at cruise? No. Exclusivity? No. Fuel economy? Yes, but why get a hot hatch if you're worried about that, get a blue motion.

Having said all that, Mitsu service and sales are low of the low.

You need to be careful suggesting alternative uses for the money round here, especially on used cars. They don't like it.
