Lots of unjustifiable nonsense is written about the Compact, especially the e36 variant. I have to admit that I used to buy into said nonsense, until actually owning an e36 318ti changed my opinion completely. It is funny how people beat them down on looks (what, compared the rest of the absolutely stunning e36 range?!), power (yet the identically-engined 318i coupe never gets the same slating) and handling (common complaint being the e30 rear suspension arrangements - what, the terrible e30 that everyone hates?).

Great little cars in my view, very unfairly maligned. Certainly not bad handlers in my book. Ok, not the most powerful cars in the world, but compare it to its peers, and for what it is, and it's quite respectable - I'd take one over a 2.0 Focus, for example. But if you're used to, or expecting, some fire-breathing monster, you'll be disappointed. Just revel in the tidy RWD handling, nicely-weighted controls and the plain but functional (and hard-wearing) interior.
