Oh here we go - when tyres become super serious business!

Since when were 19" alloys an e39 M5 standard size you total bell end !
I didn't realise they were 19's - but even so, I'm sure there were other tyres available to order.

This is a quite lively thread about running E39 M5's - there are two distinct camps one saying they cost loads and questioning corner cutting, the others saying they are quite reasonable. It's hardly unexpected that you'd get people offering up opinion when you pop into said thread with an M5 having made that tyre choice. It's not personal and its not worth swearing at people about is it?

M5 Russ said:
It seems from your profile that's it's highly unlikely you will ever own one so try and keep the jealousy under control eh. Failing that you come and find me at the next PH meeting and we can have chat and I can educate you on how different an M5 is to the shopping trolley you drive. No need for thanks it all part of the service.
Oh come off it. Why does a debate on running M5's need to get personal? Take a look at my profile again if you are so convinced I'll never be able to afford an E39 M5, you'll find not only did I buy mine for about what a good one costs these days, I've also since owned a much more expensive car as well, not that I should need to wave that around as some sort of validator.

It's nothing at all to do with 'jealousy', it's just an expression of suprise in a thread about M5's. It's not just me who is suprised you'd want to run such a tyre on such a capable, competent, potent weapons grade super saloon. You'll be amazed at the transformation were you to stick some more capable rubber on it!

You are absolutely right about how different the M5 is from my car though. All the more reason to get some decent rubber on it.

Here is a link to the low cost alloy supplier in case you wanna take your 530 there smile

Even more confused then - he's a top bloke and very well reknowned so I'm sure he'd have been able to source you a set of Pilot Sports or whatever had you asked. I looked into him when I fancied some reps for my 335i (I must have imagined owning that though, as you say I'll never afford an E39 M5) and from what I could tell he was more than happy to source any choice of tyre for his packages.

There is no need for us to have a massive handbag session over a set of tyres. You are as entitled to your opinion that Nankangs are good as we are entitled to our opinion that we'd run from them screaming.

And come on, I don't want to fall out with somebody who has such an equisite taste in vehicles as yourself. Your car is gorgeous!

No hard feelings?

+1 on that silver M5. One owner cars are pretty hard to find these days. I looked at several before finding my 2 previous owner car.

Fox, you may wish to look away now as I have a feeling this combination in particular will engender a terminal bout of itchy wallet syndrome, in a good way.
Wow, that is incredible perfect and totally lovely in every way, even with the requisite tree interior.

yum

What a car!

Saw that on the thread, very nice indeed.

BTW, I never heard from the 750i people, which is slightly disappointing but good for you because it means (I assume) it is still for sale!
How odd. Given it's been for sale for half a year, they mustn't be in a rush to sell it. Which as you say, suits me just fine. biggrin

I don't mind if it sells before I can afford to buy it back, just hope it sells to a PHer so I can follow its progress and know it'll get cared for by the right sort of owner. It's too rare to ruin and it'll upset me to see it go that way. Sod's law it'll get picked up by a classic nut and only re-emerge five years hence at double the price hehe

I can't help but look at my present one with a certain amount of disdain and regret, knowing that I sold the wrong one when I had both. To get this one up to the standard of that one will cost around the purchase price of that one, albeit via a slow drip rather than a lump. banghead

Live and learn though...

BM Sport could have sourced better tyres but the car was booked in to Evolve for some serious tuning so time was tight so I took the tyres as that's what he had in the right size ON THAT DAY.

Edit I forgot this but the reason why I changed the alloys is the AP 6 pot callipers don't fit under the standard alloys hence the tight schedule with Evolve etc smile

The car has done less than 1000 miles in 2 years and when it comes out of its winter sleep, A nice new set of tyres will be purchased.
Can we all leave the mud flinging now and enjoy your cars rather than trying to get cheap laughs on an Internet forum.

I hope to be at most BMW and Pistonheads shows this year and will be more than happy to talk to you guys in respect of E39 M5 tuning and offer any advice I can.

Costs.

There seem t be quite a few posting re cost of ownership of an M5 (particularly the E39). But then you see things like "I've done 7k miles in 14 month" or something similar.

I do 2000 miles a month in a 00 E39 M5, every month, rain, sunshine or even snow. Have been doing so for nearly 3 years now.

I have an "ordinary" job with a car allowance and mileage allowance. I honestly reckon that, fuel apart, my M5s have cost me less to run that colleagues who bought brand new golfs and mondeos.
I reckon that 3 years and 75k miles knocks £15k off the value of these cars? Yes they both have the security of a warranty but have service costs/tyres etc. I guess that I've lost £6-9K in depreciation.

The sums do add up!!!

yupp, the same situation with me

I bought the car with 60K miles and it now has close to 75K, all servicing costed me 500 EUR and I even didn't have to change the tires as they were brand new when I bought it...all in all if it stays with me for a couple more years I am prepared for a couple of 1K bills but hey do you know of any other >400 hp car that is cheap to maintain?!

counting depreciation I would definitely lose more with a new golf/mondeo/fiesta, and there is no way you can compare that plastic junk with this 400hp monster..

I guess the comparison of an E39 M5 to a Mondeo/Astra/Fiesta is unfair but there should really now be very little depreciation on an E39 M5, at current levels its hard to imagine (good ones) getting much cheaper. If we are minded to make a comparison against (almost any) new car the running costs of an E39 M5 will be equal to or less than depreciation in most cases I would imagine.

This well known car; http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3622790.htm looks absolutely excellent for £9k.

Interestingly I dug out the November 2010 copy of Total BMW as there is an E39 M5 buyers guide in there I wanted to re-read. Their verdict is;

"The rumour mill suggests a heavily funded offshore account will be needed to cover annual running costs, but beyond their appetite for fuel and if you're enthusiastic, tyres, running this super saloon needn't cost a fortune. Just pay it the attention it deserves and you will find the E39 M5 an incredibly satisfying thing to own"

Maybe it's an urban parking pacification device.

Regrettably it is very unusual for a big, powerful, complex and expensive car to become miraculously "cheap to run" in its old age.

As with all cars in later life, budget 5% of its NEW cost for annual maintenance. So that's £3,000 p.a. on a car which originally cost £60,000. Hopefully it will work out cheaper than that but at least you'll be prepared....

That is one lovely car and a corking advert I'm almost tempted to buy it, thankfully I am saved by being about £8750 short of the asking price, I wonder if he'll take an offer?

unlike these modern cars(E60 and newer) it is a lot more DIY friendly, if you exclude tires taxes and other stuff it can come up very cheap to run..regarding the car abilities of course, nobody is stating it can be as cheap to run as a fiesta

laugh I was thinking of one of these myself, for the reason you suggest, but just couldn't bear to do it. I'd rather move house than defile the car!

It's a removable tow bar that sits in the boot 99% of the time. There's a cover for the bumper that masks the fitting point off, so it looks like a normal M5 rear bumper. Very expensive option from memory. Almost £1k.
