RE: SOTY: Jaguar XJR
Discussion
Well I bought the Renault 19 Chamade 16v @ a bargain price. Goes like stink, hasn't missed a beat and in truth drives better than my old Mk2 16v Golf. Keep them sheds coming in and looking for a good Lexus Ls 400 @ less than £2k to replace it. It's an age thing and need a Sunday only barge to go and fetch my Sunday Post.
Great choice, the XJR.
I purchased the E30 325i Track Car.
I still have it.
It passed it's MOT in November, no issues whatsoever.
Runs perfect, and puts a smile on my face everytime I drive it. Shout out to BarnatosGhost and the boys who did the conversion - superb job and done nicely. Feels solid and well put together.

Anyway back to topic - the XJR still looks good for a 17 year old car and if the engine & gearbox still work well then it would be a fantastic car for occasional use.
Having checked the DVLA website I noticed it is not currently taxed. Hopefully this is just because it is being kept off the road over the winter months...

I bought this Jag, got it for £750 and it was a bargain, picked it up from Brighton and drove 280 miles home and it didn't miss a beat. Not bothered by tatty body as all I want it for is the engine, gearbox & running gear as it's all going in a 2002 SWB transit, I've got my work cut out making it all fit but going to start at weekend. Was going to go with Jag V8 but to much money to chop up for donnor car, plus the striaght six is more reliable.
It pulls like a train and would have only nedded front suspension bushes for MOT, everything works on the car as it should and apart from being a but tatty it's a great car.

Great choice. I love fast saloon cars like the M5 & S8 in Ronin, the 7 series & Audi from The Transporter films. I think early 4.2 V8 Audi S4's look great value right now at under £5k.
?
Yikes! Are they???
Bakerstreet sneaks off to autotrader to check!
Edit: Just checked and they are not under £5k. More like £6-£6.5k for the cheapest ones.

Excellent choice. This was my second ever Jag. Straight six loveliness in black with black leather...very gangster. To this day, I don't think there is a better mobster car out there.
Sadly, like all Jags of this age, the list of problems went on and on...new supercharger, new cooling system, new exhaust, multiple electrical niggles as well as the usual rattles, loose trim and bits falling off.
Still, If I ignore what I spent on maintaining it, I sold after 18 months of ownership having lost only £500 in depreciation. Now no new Jag can give you that kind of ownership experience!

Fantastic shed.
However, the most entertaining SOTW was the Probe. 200+ comments that had nothing to do with the car. If you've missed it then it's here http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?f=23&...
Happy New Year to you all.

Keep an eye on eBay. None under £5k right now but they do come up... There is a clean s4 in black for £5995 and the seller would consider an offer:

Great value car for the winter!

I sourced and negotiated a deal on a 95 XJR for Cooky.
Beautiful car on which the guy had been informed it would fail an mot because of emissions.
Personally I didn't think it would and he had a suspicion that the garage were after more money.
Anyway, with steel to capped boots I waded in and managed to get it for £1200. This was about 4 years ago too when good examples such as that were pulling 3-4k!!!
Loved driving it too, the first supercharged car I'd driven and what a smile it put on my face, especially when my old man saw me belting passed him in it.
Cracking soty!!!

Good comfortable car with heaps of power but any driving enthusiast will get bored with it in not too long at all, unless you happen to come across one of the rare manual-equipped examples. Now that would be one to keep! Why aren't there more of these? What were the original owners thinking??

Possibly two reasons - the first is the XJR demographic and driving style is not all about frantically redlining through the gears at every opportunity, it's more about making very rapid yet discrete progress and the second is the agrigultural nature of the Getrag manual gearbox and weight and dead feel of the clutch. The X300 series was the last Jaguar XJ available with a manual box - most often bought in base model 3.2 Sport spec as that was the cheapest option and IIRC less than 5% of sales were manual and only about 100 of those were XJR's. With the introduction of the V8 XJ in 1997 and new 5 speed ZF box the XJ went automatic only as the newer gearbox was considered so good and controllable that a manual option was not needed.
