Audi S4 V8 engine

It's not really to do with OHC as such, more that Audi have a front longitudinal engine and 4wd gearbox, where the front differential is in the main tranny. Hence, in order to not have lots of engine sticking out the front (and ruining the balance) they have to get the engine as short as possible, hence the rear chain drive solution.
I dont get it, how does having the timing gear on the rear of the engine make it shorter? It still has to go somewhere wether it be at the front or the rear the timing gear is still going to be the same thickness is it not?The VR6 24V in my Golf 4 Motion has the timing chain in the flywheel side also and its a dam tight fit to work on the auxillary drive belt.
I have B7 S4 cab with a manual gearbox. It's been totally reliable, but to honest, it's one of, if not the, most disappointing "fast" cars I've owned.
It makes lots of lovely "GRR" / "RARR" / "ROAR" noises when you put your foot down, but it is neither as quick, economical or pleasant to to drive as the Merc CLK 500 I traded for it.
I'll sell it in the next couple of months and get something that isn't all show and no go.
ETA. We also had a B6 S4 Avant auto a few years ago and it was a much better car for being far more discreet than the B7

I'd agree with you from the POV of a convertible... but for a family estate there's not much to touch it as an all-round package. (Very) quick, discreet, cheap, generally bulletproof. You should try an Alpina B3S BiTurbo cabriolet next IMO

Hmmm...not convinced on that one. Sure, It doesnt make a song and dance about it and yes its a heavy car but it can hold its own reasonably well against its direct competitors.
And how is the B6 more discreet than the B7? I am guessing quieter?

Hate to be the exception to the perceived rule but I've owned a B6 S4 V8 from new in 2003. It's only done 40k miles and currently does about 3k per year. It frequently sits in the garage for 2-3 weeks at a time unused but when I do use it it is a 100+ mile trip.
Servicing is the 2 year, 17k mile regime so based on my annual mileage it's always had an oil change sub-10k miles. No rattle on start up and I've only ever bought 2l of top up, one of which is unused!
I can't explain this compared to the majority of the stories on this thread. I could say it was my highly developed mechanical sympathy with the car but I did managed to trash the clutch and DMF at 34k!
Ahh it's because the car knows who's boss. All this being gentle with the car just makes it get all diva-ish. Drive it like you stole it and all will be fine.. :-)Servicing is the 2 year, 17k mile regime so based on my annual mileage it's always had an oil change sub-10k miles. (I offer no guarantee with my advice)
The B7 always reminds me of a gym weightlifter - massive muscles, but not really that strong in the real world. With only two tail pipes and a slightly more muted noise, the B6 isn't quite as showy as the B7.
Granted, it can hold it's own, but for all the shouting and "look at me" of the B7, you'd expect it to be something a little special. I'd love to try an RS4, as they have the grunt to go with the looks.
The B6 Avant was a nice, quick, discreet family car. The B7 cab just follows Audi's trinkety approach to car design.
All IMO, of course, and it must have been successful, as it looked lovely on the forecourt and sounded epic on the test drive!!!

There is no way you could describe any S4 as being "not that strong in the real world". The B7 S4 has 341 BHP (I think)... by any chalk that is a hell of a lot. Coupled to 4WD and fairly short gearing it will easily slaughter the majority of other traffic in day to day driving.
Granted, it won't carve apexes (apices?) like an Elise, or an M3 - but it is a seriously quick car.
I liken mine to a big, daft, powerful - yet dumb - dog.
ETA - on the right wheels it looks more understated that most S-Lines... only the quad exhausts / aluminium give it away.

Mine does look nice - Dolphin grey with 15 spoke alloys. It really does look the nuts.
I guess I just haven't gelled with it.
The Merc I had before was so much quicker, quieter, more economical to service and fuel that the Audi had a hard act to follow. The Audi beats the Merc hands down on insurance costs, though - £330 / year vs £890 / year for the Merc!

Taken from the website of a company who tweaks S4 gearboxes....

This upgraded 6th gear is for customers with V8 S4s looking for better fuel economy and/or a higher top speed in 6th gear. The stock 6th gear in your transmission is .78. At 60 mph this yields about 2400 rpm. At 70 mph it yields about 2800 rpm. At 80 mph it yields about 3200 rpm.

Does seem very short for a V8. My Monaro would be about 1800rpm at 85mph in 6th.
Yeah, but I'll bet your monaro doesn't rev to 8250, like the B7's V8 does. Higher revs=shorter gearing.C
The B7 S4 at 7000.
