Ok, OK, different take on this topic. It's obviously too easy to pick the hot version of any given model and say it's the standout version.

What about this then as an alternative: Audi A2 "3l"

We never got the 3l version of the Audi A2 in the UK, but it was the engine the car was originally designed for, maximising every aspect of the A2's revolutionary design. With this 1.2 diesel engine installed, the A2 could manage an amazing 100mpg.

But Audi, in their infinite wisdom gave us a silly 1.6 petrol instead.

Nominate the VW New Beetle RSi - 4 wheel drive and 6 speed box vs. the normal VW New beetle (front wheel drive and max engine size of 2.5 v5).

Can't get much further from the original variant and any excuse to post a pic of my car:

O/T Blim_bug but were you at/near Hampton Court on New Years Day? I'm convinced I walked past a Beetle RSi with that reg on?

To be honest I was going for the extreme of that, i.e. What soul crushingly indifferent model has a variant that you actively lust after and would sell your granny for a drive, but it does seem to have taken on a 'pick the hot variant of any model' theme!

Civic Type R would be a good example of what we're not talking about. Nice car yes, and the standard car is dull, but it is in essence a bodykitted version of the original with retuned suspension and an extra thousand RPM. I also can't imagine lusting after one.

The VXR was a pretty good one, no-one on god's earth would lust after an Insignia, but spotting a VXR with a thumping Turbo V6 exhaust note, big fat arches and AWD and I actually though: 'you know what, I fancy one of those'

No, no, no change it back. Behold:- the ultimate sleeper.

The Lotus Carlton is a very special car though and I do love it dearly.
I like that - am I right in thinking that very late 75s had the same grille with a Rover badge?

late 75s (as did the MGs) had different headlights and the the V8s had a two tier grille like recent Audis

But the standard Rovers didn't have a grille that looks a bit like that one ?

Is there a standard rover grille that'd fit the MG V8? Thinking ultimate sleeper by making it look like it's grandadmobile cousin

smile I just love to wind Audi lovers up that's all, the RS6 does seem to get slated for being less fun than the M5/E63 though.

With 260hp, it's hardly an ultimate sleeper and most would be hard pressed to spot any huge difference if they saw one. wink

But £70k and slower than an R32 Golf! Doh!

Mk4 R32 for me (I had one for a year)
Take one range of well made but tragically poor handling hatches, work a little chassis/suspension magic, bore out the 2.8 V6 to 3.2 litres, add fat exhausts and at the time, it had a wee hint of "bonkers" about it. Nothing all that amazing now but when I had it, people used to do a double take when they found out if had a 3.2 V6 in it (ONLY when asked I hasten to add!!)

Also the Clio with the 200 Sport and the Panda with the 100hp version - both focussed purely on being fun!

I agree on the M3 but wouldn't be able to tell a saloon and coupe apart anyway as they all look "BMW-flavour".

The Lotus Sunbeam and Chevette HS/R are also good candidates but my favourite was always the HP Droop Snoot Firenza which made me salivate as a teenager.
Love this, one was up for sale late last year for £7-£8k I think and I thought about it. I would need to have been single to get one or if I had got one I would have been single shortly thereafter!!

If only they'd actually made it frown

Saw this on a stand at Donington WTCC last year, looked fantastic but also looked very well used, there were cracks in the body work and the paint was chipped allover.

Nope, not me - my RSi is off the road at the moment having snapped the lower control arm on the offside rear - being fixed as we speak actually.

There are 4 or 5 in the UK at last count.

Also like to nominate the BMW M3 saloon. Probably one of the most special special versions of a car. It's actually DIFFERENT to the lesser versions. Not just tweaked bumpers and big wheels, or eve flared arches. It has the whole front end of the coupe, which is different to the saloon.

I LOVE BMW for that.

It really sets the car apart. No fake versions of this!
Which one is the M3?
