Funny you should ask this question.
I just bought a TVR Chimaera for £3,5k, drive it to Germany and back and could quite easily sell it fir ca. £7k to £8k.
Yes, needs some basic mechanical attention ( clutch) but runs great otherwise.
RV8 smooth as a babies you know what, great GT car with big boot for long trips.
Previous Chimaera did many trips to Germany and south of France without a hitch.
Also rare car so lots of friendly foriegn strangers asking questions about the 'British sports car'.

They do seem like good value; especially a later one for about £5k. There are quite few about though.

It's the green Jag XK8 that does it for me, will fit in at Monaco much better than an older SL.

Very lucky man.
Stretch the budget a little and get a VX220 NA - only problem is you won't want to sell it wink
Great idea though, enjoy it.

Edit - just seen your moan about mx5 comfort - definitely not a VX then.
Although IMO they are great, love the legs flat feeling rather than seated as for boot space, could easily fit two large sport bags in the boot!

SL is a good call as is the XK8 if checked thoroughly pre trip.

or the great fun but fingers crossed choice...

It does amuse me about the fingers crossed - the cars done 102k for f!!ks sake it must be fairly reliable to get to that amount!
This would be the a great choice, sense of occasion, relaxed etc. And if you can stretch to 6kish you get a 56k one wink

Personally, I'd be looking to buy the Jag XK now, and sell it immediately on returning. If you did it right, the fact that drop-tops are cheaper in the winter should allow you to break even, or thereabouts.

Great thread!

XK8 Convertible?

Prices on these are remaining firm so you really shouldn't have any problem selling it again in the summer.
Aye, my first thought was XK8.

whatever you say about its mileage, driving to Monaco in a TVR of that age would always hold a risk of something going awry. I'd love to do it and love the cars, but I stand by my comment.

986 Boxster? Possibly a bit small, but I wouldn't imagine much more so(if any) than a Z4.
