home bargains shops have gulf oil of the correct grade for £9 /4ltrs , exceeds the spec for that engine

just expalin its the life blood of the engine , clean oil should keep it going for years , filthy ruined oil will soon kill it

I'd change the oil, but I'm not sure why you would bother changing the filter - nothing nasty will have happened to it when the engine overheated or when you took the head off, so it'll still be fine.

If your mate is skint, the own brand oil will be plenty good enough for an engine like that. That's an Asda price of £8, pocket tappers!
