What mileage would you expect when buying a brand new car?

I would expect a factory order to have less than 20 miles on it at your collection. However, if its one from another showroom, and the salesman has told you it will be driven, add that into the deal. Its going to get miles! Sometimes its a lot cheaper to send a salesman to pick a car up (or a driver) than it is to transport it once the customer has tried to get every penny out the deal!

Why? They should be delivering it on a car-transporter.Put it this way, I wouldn't buy a new pair of shoes that had been delivered by the salesman walking to the shop in them!

To give that some perspective, someone could drive your mate's Astra from Ellesmere Port (where it was built) to Trafalgar Square and back again... and still only cover 414 miles.Some choice swear words and copious amounts of manly disapproval are in order.

I don't think you understand me. Why would it be moved on it's own at all? A transporter (FULL) would drive from the factory to the dealer and carry my car that I had ordered, plus a load of others at the same time.dave0010 said:

OK, I'm with you now. Right, if it's a brand new car to my spec then it should be single digit. But if it's another car that's in stock elsewhere then I would be prepared to be much more generous with the mileage I'd expect to see on it. It may have been on previous test drives and things. And if I'd asked a dealer to get it from another branch for me then you're right, I'd either accept that it would have to be driven across for me, or I'd have to pony up a bit more to cover the cost of moving it, afterall it's me asking for the car that's not here. I still stand by my "single digit" opinion for cars built to order.FunBusMk2 said:

Very true. It was far cheaper for me to fly up and collect our California (VW NOT Ferrari!!) and I got to check it over first.The insurance on car transporters sounded dodgy and there was no way some goon was going to put the first miles on it by driving it down! Enjoyed the 350 miles drive too.
