RE: SOTW: Hyundai Coupe V6
Discussion
An acquaintance of mine used one of these in 2.0 guise as a rally car.
He managed to squeeze 197 BHP out of it on more or less standard internals and no forced induction so I'd imagine it'd be very possible to squeeze a few more nags out of this.
Have to admit, I was never as fan of them, but now they're shed money their attractiveness has increased somewhat.

Hmm, I have no doubt that Hyundai will be making great respectable cars in the near future, but this is pants.
Would far rather spend my £1000 on:
Toyota Celica GT Gen6 (174bhp)
Nissan Sylvia S13
Honda Integra (Non Type R, but still a Vtec)
BMW E36 Coupe - 325 or 328
VW Corrado 16v
Alfa Romeo GTV
A shed isn't all about reliability (clue is in the name - but i would suggest that the Celica, Integra and 3 series would match the Hyundai) - its about being seen in a car that has a degree of class and looks about it for peanuts money. This Coupe has neither class, nor looks in my opinion, and that is reflected in its low price.
To me the car looks like you are a cheapskate who wanted a new coupe rather than a sensible person who would buy a 1 year old Coupe with a bit of class.

Nice for a grand I suppose, little bit of paint and tlc it could be mint, no point complaining its FWD and not very powerful as if it had say 230 bhp and RWD it would be PH-tastic and be changing hands for 8 or 10 grand.
This marked a styling return to form as the first ones were quite pretty, this is but the one in the middle was a hideous creation, I mean, seriously, what were they thinking ?

Drove one once, very unimpressed.
Slow, and handled like my vectra, i.e. very FWD and understeery. Plus it was like trying to drive a postbox, you couldn't see out and the narrow glasshouse + black interior made me feel claustrophobic.
If it's going to be boring to drive it must be comfortable and practical.

Good shed.
I sold these for 4 years when new, and to address a few nay-sayers:
Yes, it only had 167 bhp but was very torquey. Hyundai's line was that the engine was deliberately detuned to preserve reliability (don't forget this, as a 52 plate, was sold with the UK's first 5 year warranty). In any event, the 2.0 four only had about 140 bhp, so the V6 was a reasonable upgrade.
6-speed was standard, assuming you didn't go slushbox (which was acually a lovely, lazy cruiser)
Handling is OK but very tyre-dependant. Standard rubber was Hankook (Korean: jobs for the boys?)and was OK but many people upgraded wheels and bought cheap tyres which resulted in understeer and oversteer - often at the same time.
Sunroof was standard, although you could allegedly special order one without. 1.6 had no sunroof, 2.0 and V6 did. If you're over 5'11" you'll end up reclining quite a bit to get comfortable.
I don't wish to defend it though: trim was awful, brake discs last about a week and remote alarms worked when they wanted to
Overall though, a decent car which was roomy, looked good and was generally very reliable. You wouldn't put half a decade of warranty on it otherwise, would you?

There isn't any good S13s under £1,000, they are all as rotten as assholes, if anyone tells you otherwise its a mythWould far rather spend my £1000 on:

I paid £1,400 for mine three years ago and it was awesome, cheap banger motoring and i loved it, the coil-overs were rock solid and broke your back when you drove it on the road and the exhaust droned like no tomorrow and the boot used to fill up with water after it rained
