Ok so this isn't the most exciting of topics, but I was wondering what people thought.

My mum wants one of these but cant decide. Shes in her 60s and wants a small, easy to use/drive, simple reliable car. Needs enough room in the back for the occasional trip to the garden centre wink

I would prefer if she went for the jazz. The panoramic roof and interior are really quite nice. For me the Notes design is a tad old hat now

Budget is no more than 10k and age no earlier than 09. So if there are any other suggestions, shoot

A very close relative to the Note but the Renault Modus. It seems to be a little less popular but on most of the mechanicals it's the same plus when I was looking a little bit cheaper. It's also available with panoramic roof. I also think they drive well and the diesels are good on economy.

I'd take the Jazz. Having driven one they're very good all round. Just avoid the I Shift semi-automatic gearbox unless you like hoping down roads!

Is the modus surviving the cull of models Renault announced not long ago?

Ah, just checked and they are killing it. http://www.fleetnews.co.uk/news/2011/12/19/renault...

Doesn't affect used availability really, but I'd rather buy a car that's still available in the UK where possible.

C

ETA: Buy a Jazz. Obviously.

My mum's in her 60s and has a diesel Note. It seems unreliable to me from the stories I hear - I think the quality of Nissans is generally lower since Renault wormed their way in, and the dealers in London anyway seem crap.

Of the two, I'd go for the Jazz, but they're both mobile lobotomies in my book. I would challenge her to look at a diesel Focus instead, to see if she really needs that high driving position and compactness. If she ignores you like my mum did, a Kia Soul might be worth a look - I've never driven one but have heard good things, and the styling's better than either the Note or the Jazz to my eye. Certainly fresher.

Go for the Jazz. Yesterday I bought a 2009 Vetec S with 18k on the clock from my local Honda dealer for £6500 including usual 12 month manufacturers warranty etc which I think is great value. This will be our third Jazz - keeping hold of our old style 1.4SE as a family hack - great for taking things to the tip, carrying bikes etc. They are just so practical with loads of space with seats folded.Build quality has always appeared to be better than the competition.

Just need to add that this will be my wifes car! - I`ll stick with my Alfa & TVR

I bought a used Jazz once with 45K on the clock. I only had it on the road for one of the three months that I owned it, the rest of the time it was back in the garage with gearbox problems. Glad they gave me 3 month warranty with it when I bought it.
It would have to be the Note for me.

Funny you mentioned the Soul. She was gunning for one a while back but I put her off it on the basis that its a Kia, and therefore was guaranteed to be s*** (although I hear it is actually quite excellent, no mother of mine will be driving a Kia smile)

We had a Soul on long term rental for about 4 months. An excellent car IMO, small enough to be fun, big enough to be decently roomy. Also has a nice elevated driving position and easy to judge extremities (you can even see the bonnet <gasp>). Surprisingly good handling and a bit of urge, although ours was the 2 litre US version, albeit with a 4 speed auto. We warmed to it greatly over thousands of miles all over California and will be buying one as soon as we land back in the UK. Of course, if you won't let your Mum buy one because you are a badge snob then she might miss out on a thoroughly decent car with a 7 year warranty......

I hear you. Sadly I am at times swayed by a badge. A 7 year warranty is indeed excellent, but considering how reliable the Jazz is (apparently), it shouldnt be needed. I would also worry that the Kia will be worth less more quickly.

I've just done 18000 miles in 10 months in a diesel Note with no issues at all. Chopping it in this week and will actually be slightly sad to see it go!

Big boot with the slidey seats, easy access, handles amusingly well for a mini MPV and it's easy to drive/park.
Regarding the reliability since Renault came in, afaik it's had no affect at all as both companies have very different testing criteria and methods.

Can't comment on the Jazz though as I've not driven one yet, although I do prefer the styling slightly I think.

I suppose we all are to some extent - the Soul may depreciate a little more I guess but you can get a brand new one for 10.5k from a broker or a demonstrator for less. I think the key to avoiding depreciation is not paying too much in the first place. The Jazz is, by all accounts that matter, an excellent car and I have had only good experiences with Honda over the years.
