Every time I see a "vs GTR" thread my heart sinks. There is some truly pathetic drivel spouted on this forum about that car.

This is a slightly weird one though, seems an odd choice of two cars. One is a classic Ferrari supercar, the other a contemporary japanese sports car. Chalk and cheese. Only the OP can decide which they want, its impossibly subjective.
Yep, unsurprisingly I too dismay at the incredibly uninformed, unresearched, untried drivel that abounds re the GTR.
Also echo that they are so different propositions that if you were really seriously comparing these two cars you'd have to have a split personality to start with - But you'd at least be happy half the time whichever you chose.

F355 vs GTR........I'd take F355 all day, and all night!

F355 vs R34 Skyline........ That becomes a tougher choice (though I'd probably just opt for the F355 again).

That's exactly what I was thinking too!

I'd find it hard to say no to a mint and R34 Vspec II Nur

Eta - and I'd go for a mint NSX Typer R over both cloud9

How is this even a contest?

On looks-The 355
On engine-The 355
On fun-The 355
On badge-The 355

The Nissan is a capable Nurburger eater but come on! look at the thing! It eats kittens!!

The F355 is just...right. From every angle. Bits of the interior may fall off but it's still a thing of beauty. I'd equate it to a supermodel girlfriend-you can just about afford her, she'll break your heart, but the memories...

...even if some of those involve you staring at her when she breaks down.

A GT-R of similar vintage to a 355 will be found 'max powering' around council estates and causing a menace in out-of-town retail parks, where its owner (and his staffie) will have 'chipped it to 900bhp innit guv'.

Says all you need to know really.
Absolutely, on his way to pick up his gyro and bang his minging lass to create some more sprogs that will have their future jobs taken by immigrants.

Did I miss anything from the Daily Mail check list?
I wonder if the Earl of Pembroke will be one of those max powering chavs as he owns a GTR ??
He also has an impressive collection of supercars including a Veyron
So what is his favourite car amongst all his exotica ???? .......G..T..R
Obviously the Earl is not a typical owner - but GTR as his favourite says total respect due.

Oh poppycock- it just means he has his own subjective opinion, and he's welcome to have it. My best mate could fancy Sly Stallone's mother, and it certainly wouldn't get my 'total respect'.

If you want a badge get the Ferrari

If you want performance then get the GT-R

I agree with this.I cant imagaine any Max Powering chavs owning GTR's to be honest. If they did they would need to be pretty mature and wealthy chavs.
The GTR may not be to everyones taste but it is a very serious performance car for very serious people.

I wish people would stop comparing the GTR to the old skyline gtr's aswell. It is a completely bespoke car and has nothing to do with the current nissan skyline or any skylines of old apart from the GTR tag.

I reckon you've got more chance of seeing Santa than the OP in either of these cars.

Sorry to sound like an old cynic, but it just smacks of another 'dreamer' thread.

Ok, this is a car forum, and there's no harm in posting 'IF you had to choose between a 355 and a GT-R, which one would you go for' thread, but I really don't believe for one second that the OP is actually serious. Everything else aside, it's a really odd couple of cars to choose between, especially when the likes of an F360, or 997 Turbo are in GT-R money, and much closer in terms of performance.

You need to take it in its' full context
His favourite car ......... amongst his collection of supercars.
Can't see why fancying a woman -regardless of who she is is relevant to another's respect - apple and pears imho

Why?

It's "only" a 355 or a GTR, we're talking what, a maximum of 60k?

We're not talking serious exotica here, and frankly unless I see compelling evidence to the contrary, I am prepared to give anyone asking such questions the benefit of the doubt.

£60k to buy, and then a lot of money to run (for both).

But, as I said, everything else aside, it's a really odd choice of two cars - they are chalk and cheese. The GT-R only exists for going really, really fast - all cool, if that's your bag. The Ferrari is essentially a classic these days, I doubt one would overly troubly my lowly Boxster S for useable performance, on public roads. Ergo, you buy one for the 'ownership experience'.

Also, for £60k, again, as I pointed out, you can get a lovely F360, or 997 Turbo (or, if they aren't fast enough, a 996 GT2) - these are cars that combine 'proper fast' with a degree of the heritage you get from the 355 ,and would make better comparison vehicles to the GT-R.

Finally, where, exactly, is the OP in this discussion?

<shrugs>

A lot of what you mention comes down to personal choice.

I mean, look what I've posted above - I've said that I'd go for an NSX Type R over either of them. Lots of people would probably think me mad for that choice, but it's a personal thing really, isn't it?

Just about every "what car?" thread will have me thinking I'd go for X, Y or Z for the same money.

As for where the OP is, dunno - if it bothers you that much, PM him!

It doesn't bother me - I just think it's a bit of a waste of people's time. But it's their time, so fine, waste it.

The Type-R makes perfect sense, that's not what I'm talking about. What I mean, is that generally, when I'm buying a car (and especially when if I was buting a car £60k) I need to know what I want from that car.

The 355 v GT-R thing is like someone asking people to help choose between a Land Rover and a Lotus Elise.

On the Hampshire early morning run last year

I was in my R35 GTR whilst there was a fellow in a F355 behind me all the way (a long way back at times)!
It was night and day in terms of performance, he just couldn't get the power down and lacked traction.

At points in the run he ended up 1/2 mile behind me through the twisties

Yes the cars are different in vast ways - 21st century vs. 20th century or digital vs. analogue

What in relaity do you want from a supercar - for me speed but people are different

I would have the Fezza 355 as a second (weekend) car no question, but if it is the only car in your garage it has to be the GTR

I drove a 355 on a track day and was expecting to be blown away. Sadly I was very dissapointed. It's a beautiful car but I personally didn't rate the handling at all. Not that I'm some driving god or car expert but I honestly had more fun/thrills driving an E36 M3.

Perhaps it was a well worn track car but I was expecting sharper responses frown

Ah. I see your dilemma. Nice to have mind you.
I think yu'll find the Aston quite same same as your porker, so wonder where the cash went.
You've got the go-kart in the Elise.

Perhaps a mega horsepower effort for a while then?
http://pistonheads.com/sales/3523331.htm

Or you could try running a TVR for a while? They're a right hoot.
Unfortunately no longer have the Elise although the Evora is also on the list. smile

Problem I have at the moment is having the spare time to actually go out and drive each car on the list so that I can make my mind up with first hand experience
