Ferrari F355 Vs Nissan GTR

On the Hampshire early morning run last year
I was in my R35 GTR whilst there was a fellow in a F355 behind me all the way (a long way back at times)!
It was night and day in terms of performance, he just couldn't get the power down and lacked traction.
At points in the run he ended up 1/2 mile behind me through the twisties
Yes the cars are different in vast ways - 21st century vs. 20th century or digital vs. analogue
What in relaity do you want from a supercar - for me speed but people are different
1/2 mile behind ? -blimey -you really weren't trying hard enough!I was in my R35 GTR whilst there was a fellow in a F355 behind me all the way (a long way back at times)!

In response, you're all right in that the GTR (any variant) will be MILES faster than the 355.
On a run a while back, I had a bog standard 997 drive around the outside of me on a big roundabout, as I was approaching the limits of grip.
That said, everyone wants to line up behind you when you give it the beans.
The 355 makes me grin like a child on Xmas day every time I drive it.

Had you been in a 997 too it would have been the same result. You would still have reached the limits of grip sooner because you were driving the tighter curve.I think it largely depends as to what you are prepared to pay for servicing etc, if i could afford it for me it would be a F355 without question, although the GTR is an Amazing car, its still lacking that special something that only a ferrari or lambo gives or at least for me anyways. Drive them both and see what you prefer...

I have a great deal of respect for what the Nissan can do performance wise but thats where it stops, i dont find it remotely exciting whatsoever. The Ferrari would be an occasion, everytime you are in it, every time you drive it.
Just out of interest, how many miles in each have you covered? There are still a few people posting here who think the nissan is going to be a far cheaper car to run than the Ferrari.I have been considering a GTR for my next car but like the OP I have always fancied a Ferrari (360).
I have been looking into running costs and from what I can gather the GTR would probably be the more expensive option.
-Tax is in the same band but insurance is around £100 more for me on the GTR.
-The GTR needs a costly service every six months regardless of mileage or 6k(08/09/10 models) wheras the ferrari needs servicing annualy or 6k.Lots of indys for servicing ferraris,GTR a bit more difficult.
-Difficult to get a fix on fuel consumption figures but im guessing a GTR would return less(heavier+more powerful)
-consumables such as tyres and brakes are FAR more expensive for the GTR.
The 355 is a bit more expensive to service than the 360 and chances are there will be more reliability issues with an old ferrari but providing you dont buy a dog,on a like for like basis I dont think there would be much in them and if anything the GTR may cost you a bit more.
The one thing in the ferraris favour at £40k money is that it wont depreciate anymore wheras a £40k GTR will.Maybe best then to scratch the Ferrari itch now then get a GTR at a later date.

Was expecting this! None, but i am basing on the fact i know the Nissan does nothing for me and the 355 gets me a little bit moist.
I dont care how fast the Nissan is or how quick it goes around the ring etc etc.
I have always loved the 355 and would love to own one some day.
I appreciate that this is not the most comprehensive assesment but in terms of desirablility and want factor, i have no interest in the Nissan despite knowing its capabilities, it just holds no excitement factor for me whatsoever.
Possibly if i drove it, i'm sure in terms of driving experience it would be a beast, however in terms of the whole package it still looks the way it does, which to my eye is fugly and the prospect of it sitting in the drive wouldnt do it for me.
I would have an Aston / Maserati and quite a few other GT's way up the list before the GTR.
Just my own opinion / preference.
You never know i may save up, buy a 355 and hate driving it....fairly unlikely though.
I can't comment on the GTR, however can give you some insige on the ferrari angle (for a 355 anyway).
Fuel consumption is comical. Expect 18mpg on the motorway. 11-12 around town. I have nfi where it goes, but its ludicrous. My 500bhp GTR was a revelation in terms of economy...
It will cost a bit to maintain, but that partly depends on how much work you're prepared to do yourself. Engine and gearbox should be trouble free and any issues would have reared their heads by now.
Paintwork gets chipped, but that's minor stuff. Thinks which are old and need to be replaced will include rads, bushes, springs, maybe dampers and coolant hoses. Nothing huge and all totally doable DIY. The manifolds tend to go plus other model specific foibles but generally they're quite robust.
they tend to eat rear tyres, bank on a set of rears every year and a set of fronts every two.

Sensible stuff.
A very good post, sir. You're absolutely right that the GT-R's depreciation will be a massive factor that (mostly) won't apply to the F355. However, while no high performance car will be cheap to run it's also true that the GT-R's costs will be more predictable. A GT-R probably cost more to own over several years but if one were to buy an F355 I'd want to hold back a bigger "war chest" in reserve. Is it fair to say that the F355 may present you with less predictable big bills than the GT-R?
This is pie in the sky stuff for me. I have no experience of driving either and I'm unlikely to be in a position to run a supercar unless I do very well over the coming 25 years.
I would get the best of both worlds and get a Porsche 993 Turbo (and I did!). Indestructable build quality, classic Porsche herritage and old world air cooled sense of ocassion.
In caopability it isn't a patch on the Datsun but who cares? It's limits are far higher than mine and I can use it every day should I wish to.
Best thing of all is they're going up in value...

Been looking into my first Supercar, but cant make up my mind.
Always loved the F355, now older are alot cheaper.
Then theres the spaceage GTR,but is only availble in semi auto.
They are both around the same price, apart from servicing.
The ferrari's a dream, but hassle, were as the GTR is modern, but still a nissan.
Your thoughts please???
Cheers
Havent read the thread so apologies if this has been said already...Always loved the F355, now older are alot cheaper.

Neither the 355 or a Nissan of any description are a supercar.
