Depends what you want it for:

Fezza = Very pretty, gorgeous sound, bragging rights, top key to pull out at a swappers party, but heavy running costs

Datsun = Astoundingly quick, astoundingly quick, astoundingly quick and astoundingly quick

Don't believe this for one second.

Owning and driving an F-car is thrilling, exciting, dream-come-true stuff. But don't underestimate the downsides - a lot of people will think you are a wker are not afraid to give you their opionion at petrol stations / car parks / etc. or just plain try and drive in your boot or run you off the road.

I didn't believe the British public could behave like that until I experienced it first hand.

If you're buying a Ferrari to impress other people you're going to have a shock.
You call it an "F-car", so to be fair people have every right to think you are a wker. It instantly makes anybody who uses that horrendous term look a pretentious tt. I always referred to mine as the dancing donkey or knackered old piece of Italian crap. Strangely enough I never got an adverse reaction from people when I referred to it like that.

Ha. I refer to mine as the Italian rust bucket.
But I also wear driving gloves...

Maybe they even each other out? hehe

If you are looking for a long term car to own and cherish for the next few decades then 355 no question.

Massively different cars though.

String backed? Ooo, suits you Sir, suits you!

The best solution for driving gloves I found were actually golf gloves. The thin Cabretta leather was brilliant. Also with alluminium gearknobs in the MG and Saggy absolute neccessities, one because the damn MG one tried to cold-weld your hand to it whilst the Saggy had such bad heat soak it tried to cook you.

I would agree that if I had to use one of the other every day I would get the GTR but for a weekend toy the 355 and I am one of those nerds who likes japanese performance cars.

Every time I see a "vs GTR" thread my heart sinks. There is some truly pathetic drivel spouted on this forum about that car.

This is a slightly weird one though, seems an odd choice of two cars. One is a classic Ferrari supercar, the other a contemporary japanese sports car. Chalk and cheese. Only the OP can decide which they want, its impossibly subjective.

For the special occasions the Ferrari without hesitation. For something that'd get regular use the GTR. A great dilemma having to chose between those 2 though.

I'd say go for the 355 and enjoy it for the year, then if you feel that its not the car for you, swap it for the GTR. But dont do it the other way around, as depreciation might hit you harder on the GTR.

I love my 355 and wouldn't ever trade it for something as soul-less as a GTR. GTR is miles quicker, but can you seriously use it? F355 can still be fun at slower speeds. I tried out conrnering a GTR last year.... I ended up sideways and much slower round the roundabout, but had a massive grin on my face.

I think the best comments in the thread have said the same thing. Get yourself the 355 and run it for a year, if you like it keep it. If not you will be able to sell it for about what you paid then get yourself a GTR or something else.

Makes sense tbh smile

This, and other comments like it. Choose wisely, and you should get free motoring for a year in 355.

I think if you are planning to use the car every day then the GTR, but if you are just looking for a toy I would go for the Ferrari. A lot of people seem to be worried about being called a wker because you own a Ferrari. Are you really bothered about some halfwit being jealous because you have a better car than him?

I hate with a passion this British way of thinking that successful people who appreciate the nicer things in life are regarded as arrogant wkers. You've worked hard to be in this position, enjoy it and fk everyone who is negative, they don't have a Ferrari after all biggrin

Interesting pairing OP, I can't imagine a sitution where I'd be considering them as alternatives to each other, whereas I could understand a dilemma between a 911 Turbo and a GTR or an F355 and an R8 or Gallardo.

Sticking to the two posted though, I'd choose the Ferrari every time, but would probably gravitate more toward the 360 Modena as prices for them seem to be little different and the later car was designed and from what I understand is more usable as a daily/regular prospect.

The respective values to me indicate that the 355 has plateaued and been rising for a couple of years, whereas the 360 is at the bottom of it's curve, so as a longer term prospect, again would pick the 360 in manual berlinetta form.

Although in reality and me being me, it would end up as a 550 Maranello.

Isn't this a purely emotional thing? I mean, if I were a track-day fan, I'd probably get the GTR - because I think even if I were a good driver on that surface, I'd struggle to get the most out of it (and I might learn something).. but an F355? Well, I'd be tarting it up past as many supermarket windows as I could (as most of the pretty cars are best seen from the outside, not inside)

Me? I'd get the slower, older, prettier, nicer sounding, mostly-going-to-break-and-ruin me, F355 and spend my summer weekends cleaning it (from the OUTSIDE!). biggrin

This does not mean I wouldn't like a GTR...

How many people actually think this though? I've been in a few cars that would be appreciated by petrolheads but should have the driver being called all sorts of names by passers by, but generally people on the street don't give a fk it seems.

Tell me how other drivers have any idea what I call the car?

Answer? They don't

If you own one and drive it on the public road you just have to accept that there are some people who will behave like utter aunts towards you just because of the type of car.

Actually it is suprisingly easy just from the body language, posture and clothing of the chap getting out of the car. Ive had anybody behave badly towards me in the car. I had a few start some comments, but I always got laughs back when I said things like that wasnt the engine noise they could hear, it was the piece of st Italian steel phsically rusting before their eyes. I never display a single second of sense of pride in my motorcars, esp. the high value ones. Its the pretentious pride or the pre-supposed sense of pride in the owner that people raise the heckles about, not the cars themselves. I therefore, always show that I treat my car with the same contempt that I treat people from Surrey. Or Yorkshire.

As mentioned before, I've had someone try and run me off the road before. You don't even have to get out of the car for people to behave badly towards you, just because of the type of car you drive. And I certainly don't behave / dress / act with a sense of "pretentious pride" when I do get out of it. There is no point, and it would be a dumb thing to do.

The fact is, there are some people that will have a pop at you because of the Ferrari badge on the car and you just have to accept that as a small price to pay for owning one.
