To be fair, they aren't. Not if you want the dizzy heights of an ELX 1.9td, with reasonable mileage and not travel 300 miles to see it.Anyone know how easy/hard a belt/tensioner/water pump change is on one of these engines?

Looking around recently I notice a lot of 7,8,9,10 year old diesel cars being sold with under 90k but with 'lost' service history.
I find any older car with low mileage and little service history very suspicious... but even more so when it is a diesel, as surely most people who buy a diesel new are expecting to do enough miles to offset the purchase price difference?
I wouldn't touch it. I would rather have one with 130k and a fully documented history.

Also check with fiat dealers to see if they can pull up any records of previous servicing.
Car mechanics magazine ran an article where they purchased a Rover with no service history, but in excellent condition. They contacted the DVLA, got a list of previous owners addresses and managed to get most of the service history after sending out self addresses envelopes.
I would buy on condition, but pay a lower price due to have no history.

I'd avoid tbh.
My folks had a Multipla for about 5 years which they used as a snotter. It never had a service, never had any coolant/oil/filter changes. If anything went wrong, they took the cheapest (bodged) way of repairing it.
It was a RIGHT st heap when they traded it in, but you can bet the dealer they traded it with probably gave it a quick tart up in the paint shop, did what was needed to MOT it and sold it for triple profit.

I'll wait and see anyway, need to see how my Volvo does on ebay (finishes on Thurs night) and then might go back for a test drive at the weekend.
A test drive is important, and several of the same make/model too.

Have you checked the MOT history online? Another one would be to ascertain the supplying dealer from the number plates - it may have been serviced with them.This particular car is actually very tidy. If it was blue, I'd definitely have to check the reg.Some poor bugger out there has probably already got it though. With its wonky wheels, random Christmas tree warning lights, shafted engine, disabled alarm, bodywork full of filler, busted airbags and doors that drop when you open them.

I bought the Jag at 20 years old without Service History and was at first worried that it might be a sign of careless owners etc. But I have been in touch with all the previous owners (3) and they all seem like decent chaps and have given me a list of what work they had done on the car when it was in their ownership, this way I had also found out that the car had been Main Dealer serviced (at the original supplying dealer) till it left the second owner in 2004.
