I reached the same conclusion on the Z4 back in 2002 and ended up buying an Elise 111S. I now have a Boxster S.
Well, we went to look at "boulevard cruisers" for the OH last year, all from about 2005, the Z4, SLK and Boxster all shortlisted, the Boxster was too "sporty" (low/uncomfortable) for the OH rolleyes, and all the Z4's we went to look at somehow managed to look a lot worse (interior) than any of the SLK's. And I even don't think it was down to worse wear alone.

Well, I guess, when released, the previous Z4 wanted to fill the gap between the SLK and the Boxster, but didn't really succeed (unless in Z4M form of course!), although it's not a bad car in any measure. The fact that they went for a folding hardtop on the new version only shows they were moving more towards the SLK than the Boxster. The question only remains then, why would you buy one over an SLK?

Badge? Merc and BMW both have a very strong brand.
Price? Near identical
Residuals? Near identical
Maintenance? again...
Looks? Very subjective

Try finding an SLK other than the base model with a manual 'box.

While I see your point, the thing is:
  1. it's a boulevard cruiser, why would you need a manual
  2. plenty of manuals around if you really want one, and not all the base model: http://suchen.mobile.de/fahrzeuge/search.html?scop... . The ratio is about 40% manual and 60% auto? confused

The SLK's manual 'box isn't even that bad any more - it's still not class-leading, but it's perfectly acceptable these days.

No manual option on the AMG, though.

"Electronic sound generator" so so wrong!!!!

I would rather drive around old classics with proper engines (and live with the higher running costs) than these things which need aural enhancement from the stereo (near enough).
You won't be the only one.
Indeed. What next!
BMW makes thrilling divine-sounding straight-6s
so this artificial noise sounds like a joke.

I think you are all being unfair. My mother recently went on a road test and bought one, trading up from her Mini Cooper.
Now that's quite cool for a lady of 82!
I encouraged her greatly, but she understood it wasn't in the hope that I inherit it. She understands that it's a feminine car for women, just like her Mini.
Her criteria? Can I get out of it, and can I open the door in the garage without catastrophe? She wasn't offended by the damping and didn't test out the 0-60 claims. She liked the fact that the ex demo car saved her £10K off the list.

1 point for getting that much power from the 2.0 engine.

Nothing for silly sounds electronically produced that suggest the engine sound is a pile of dung.

Nothing for not even considering a six cylinder option.

Screw Brussels and the bureaucrats, there will oil around long after I'm dead and many more ice ages/climate changes regardless of what we try to do with emissions.
