That's how I always do it if I'm dubious of the stability of the jack I'm using, although I'll apply a bit pressure with a wrench to make sure the wheels are properly seated rather than just hand tightening.

If nothing else, you can't tighten the front wheel bolts much if you're on your own because there's no way to stop the whole wheel/hub assembly from turning.

Heading for the Darwin awards that one....
surely doing what i said is better than trying to change a wheel on a car which is basically balanced on a glorified twig?
HIM not you!

As you said, loosen the bolts while the car is on the ground as this not only makes it easier to remove the bolts but also tends to break any corrosive grip the wheel has on the hub before being raised.

I find it interesting that you have chosen to remove the winters at the point when according to the Met office records the temps are at their lowest and there is the highest chance of snow ie January, February and March. Best of luck with your experiment

Are my eyes a bit dicky today, or is the door a different shade to the rest of the car?

+1 for certain!
Glad I'm not the only one hehe

Now I look again it does look a bluer hue to the rest of the car.

PH, has the car had a 'smart' repair on the side, or do they all look like that?

Just from experience, stuff like that only gets worse with age hehe

I want to like this but I don't. The last Anniversey model was much nicer. The black wing mirrors on this make it look like my mums old white metro back in the day.

THose GTD wheels are gash. they look like some 70s Japanese wheeltrims.

Part of me prefers the Mk V really.

There is something every so 'blobby' about the new VI... just a bit bland looking, like the early 00's Seat Cupra.

More details and stuff to appreciate on the V in my view.

Not really sure how you can get excited about a Golf though, when things like 147's with 3.2 V6's exist biggrin (or do they any more, hmmm, maybe not frown )

Nowadays, most people would prefer these wheels and tyres:

over these:

Big wheels, slammed suspensions and low profiles - 3 ways to spot a non-driver.

exactly that, i use the car everyday do over 35k a year in it.

Test drove on 18s and 17s and much prefered the 17s from every PoV espeically ride. The fact they also look better on the car is a nice bonus.

And its a Golf, its not meant to be that exciting, but it does everything really really well, including being much faster than a crappy diesel has any right to be.

So that explains why I still have 13" steels with 155/70 hehe

Does look very smart with those wheels and the LED tailamps. Still don't think it quite justifies the GTD badging though, given a regular 1.4 TSI 160 is quicker...

I don't think it would make much difference unless the tyres had studs.

The Golf was in Weymouth all weekend. Where there was no snow smile. [/smugness]

Riggers,
Is your driving destinations for the Golf restricted to the 5 day weather forecast?
