Wrong tires

Early January is not brave to switch to Summer bias tires it is irresponsible.

If / when the snow comes down and you slide across the road crashing into the oncoming car and killing a family I doubt anyone will care if the wheels look right.

Actions like this give the ant fast car lobby the ammo they need and rightly so.

I don't think it would make much difference unless the tyres had studs.
Hi,

From my experience winter tyres make a huge difference, I used a Seat Cupra R for 2 winter with non-stud winters on and drove in fresh snow over a foot deep daily as well as packed down stuff.
On summers I could not safely move the car round the drive, on the winters I could drive around at sensible speeds with predictable grip levels and braking distances.

I honestly feel it should be law to use them through the Winter months, having experienced the difference in the past 5 years of use on a LCR, Jazz, Micra and Golf TDi.

I've seen many a 4x4 M5, Range rover etc crashed in a field because although the 4x4 give the ability to accelerate it make little difference when you pass the grip levels during braking and cornering and off you go.

Too many people try to blame the council etc saying where are the gritters and so on, I see it more like every other winter activity, hill walking, skiing etc if you are not properly kitted up do not go out and risk your life and more importantly those of others.

must admit, i have my winter wheels on my 130i, i know the winter tyres make a lot of sense and even though its not been cold cold yet, with all this rain the winter tyres have outperformed any summer tyre i have ever had in the wet. Helps too that i only have a slimlimne 205 on the rear as a posed to the normal 245's.

However,,,,,,

I did look longingly at my summer wheels in their larger size and better dark colour and design and thought to myself, go on just for the week, stick em on. But i know its not worth it, roll on April.

Wow
Wow indeed. He's been a member for five years and in that time two of his three posts have been just now on this thread. Rather than tyres I'd be wondering about his reaction times after taking about a year to reply here. Hmmm.

I prefer the look of the smaller wheels, less fussy. Then again, hot hatches in white are not really made for subtlety

So your making safety judgments on the number of posts someone has ?

Good call on leaving them on, my mates Corsa was written off last week by an out of control 1 Series BMW changing lanes as it skidded around on ice, luckily no one was hurt.

I'm still on my winter tyres - bought a 2nd set of identical 18's for them. I'm leaving them on as they got me out of trouble once or twice on snow so far as I do have to traverse the higher areas every so often.

I'm running Nokian A3 which were selected for performance after reading many articles and they're OK but outside of snow / ice or decent sub zero conditions I would take my Goodyear Eagle Assymetric tyres any day!

I had Bridgestone RE 050As and next to those anything would be better below 15 celcius but the Eagle's are a world ahead of the winter tyres for wet weather performance, stability, braking safety and getting the power down. I was caught out by the winter tyres braking away at the rear under light braking at 3 celcius on wet salted roads - I caught it before the ABS did but it's not something I was preparing myself for, I was alreay driving with additional due care as I could feel the tyres sliding around under me (which is fun when it remains controlled).

If you're considering using winter tyres all year please consider trying a better summer tyre first - I assure you they're not up to the task of coping with greasy wet surfaces with the same proficiency as a good summer / rain tyre (I always buy a tyre for wet performance over dry as I stay nearer the limit for longer in the wet at license retaining / legal speeds).

Totally agree, Brigestone Blizzacks for Winter, Uniroyal Rainsport2 for summer
