From a man called VolvoT5 - the irony vortex is strong here, I'm being sucked-in - hellllllllll...........................p/
Not my opinion! As a (non-german) 'barge' owner...yes both a T5 CD (charcoal grey, fully factory tinted windows...stands out in the Audi, BM office carpark...small t5 on the back..amazing how many people walk past and do a double take ..realising what it is)...and its 'ikkle brother , the t version.. I thoroughly approve of this!
As has been said - its NOT GERMAN... there are other cheap cars out there, Alfa's, Vauxhalls, Citroens recently... I thought the point of SOTW was ..'Hmmm I've got a grand in my pocket?..what car could I buy just cos' I can...?..what do I fancy?...'
Whether you keep it is another matter..but surely its about anything given a hypothetical 'farrsand..'
- seems to be the unwritten rule is 'Ya, buy ze jarman choice..uzzervise..ve will invade ze forums...' - from the pro german contingent!!' (excuse dodgy attempt at textual German accent..)

Really? It looked pretty impressive in 1974 when it came out and hardly an amalgamation of anything.
Went along to the launch party at Bronhill Motors in Hainault with my parents at the time and got a Norev toy Renault 5 in the lucky dip. & some yellow & blue CX balloons

In 1974 my old man flew over to the factory in france and drove one of these back...it was a CX2200 same gold colour with the tan interior. In those days it was very modern looking. Didn't have power steering IIRC, but had the elec windows in the front. The speedo on the drum was very cool but I didn't like it so much when I finally got round to driving it. The rear window was concave and probably very expensive to replace, the spats I liked as much as the suspension... I used to play with this much to the old chaps dispair.
But with our family hols in the South of France it was perfect for wafting down the autoroutes as it was driving through the dunes on the beach.I remember an Audi beaching and a superior SM with a young couple in... she with her feet up on the dash. So french, so cool.
I'd be happy with a CX GTi just for the leather interior..
Ah brings back fond fond memories of my fathers .
When we moved from Salfords in Surrey up to Falkirk my father traded in his p plate metallic brown renault 16 tx , in its place he purchased a metallic blue 1979 citreon cx reflex.
We travelled up and down the m6 to Cheam on many occasion .
The car proved faultless apart from carrying a litre or two of Citreons LM fluid.
In board discs, self centering steering, perfect in a crosswind and whacky but what a wafter.

I had a CX25GTi Turbo 2, light metallic blue with a black leather interior. I had it tuned by Maikonics to 250bhp/320lbft. It certainly surprised a few people and despite a FWD chassis dating back to the 70s it suffered from absolutely zero torque-steer.
That'd be the centre-point steering geometry, zero camber, zero caster suspension and DIRAVI steering.Unfortunately, Citroen today has forgotten everything it once knew.

Wasn't the longest name something like
Citroen CX 2400 Turbo2 Safari familiale??
Terrific shed!
Safari described the five seat estates and Familiale the eight seaters. My dad had a Citroen CX 2500 DTR Turbo 2 Familiale. I think it may have also had a massive ABS badge on the boot as well. Citroen CX 2400 Turbo2 Safari familiale??

I adored my CX. Despite it's ancient 2.5 engine and 3 speed gearbox, it was a better cruiser than the Xm that replaced it. I'd have it back tomorrow if I could coax more than 20 mpg out of it!

and I think it was called the CX because of its very low CX factor... co-efficient of drag.
0.22 - something like that.
Correct. You win a pie.0.22 - something like that.
It wasn't that good; more like 0.32 or 0.34 on later cars with big tyres. But since it was a decade before the C3 Audi 100 that they wouldn't stop banging on about its Cx of 0.30-0.32, it was pretty good.
Mind you, Audis were reliable in those days and very rustproof...
My Dad had one, took us to many places in Europe, fond memories of this car even if at times the pneumatic suspension made me feel sick when sitting at the back. I didn't get to drive it as it went to the breakers just about when I got my driving licence
The estate version was even more cool than the saloon - good luck finding one in good shape now.
The ultimate barge for going off a few days f**king around in style with old mates.
Tissier 6 wheeler - coolest of them all

I love this SOTW. I think it might be a bit lost on the PH crowd personally, but then it's good to have a change from the 525i/728i/E230/280SEL norm. I'm a bit of Citroen devotee (the proper stuff, not the ste stuff that most of today's opinions are formed on.
Although I only own a BX which is pretty boring in comparison I have driven a CX before, a very early circa '85 2.5TD, actually badged a 'TRD' (the UK cars were switched to 'DTR' to avoid the turd reference....TRD actually standing for 'tres riche......diesel (don't know French for diesel)). The thing that grabbed me about the CX was the way it just wrapped around you straight away. It felt half it's size once on the move, which is something only an Alfa 156 has managed with me before. The ride is as good as people would have you believe, DIRAVI steering really is for winners and each time I see a CX they seem to look better and better. I personally think that you could apply knobhead Clarkson's "you're not a true petrolhead until..Alfa...."etc etc to Citroens too. Yes many of the more recent offerings have been shash, but so what? Alfa Romeo Arna anyone? But there is just too much to get wrapped up in with something like a CX to not find it utterly brilliant IMO. You could never say it was boring, and that's the most crucial feature of a car to me.
The distinct pattern in a thread like this is with those who jump in and slate it. Many will say it's ste, because they don't like its looks. Many others will say it's ste because it's French. Lots of others will say it's ste because older generations have told them "that hydrolastic rubbish always goes wrong" (Does it? Ask a Maxi driver and find out)
Fewer will have actually driven one, or spent time with one. Like with most things, preconceptions rule.
The link is that all who do slate it seem to either come from the German, Blue Oval or Griffin crowd. No point to make, just an observation. I guess it's all about people who like to be different, or people who like to follow trends.
But then if they didn't divide opinion so aggressively like someone pointed out earlier, the values would be higher and they'd be more commonplace. Right now, a CX is a car for someone who wanted to buy a CX.

Thought SOTW rules required tax and MOT.... at £999 and tax at buyers cost, this puts it over SOTW's famed £1k mark....
Nice car though...
You do tend to see advertised a lot of older cars (10+ years) on SORN now. Are people selling because the £215-260 road tax cost isn't affordable or justifiable on such cars? If so there's going to be a lot of cheap '06 onwards sheds soon (those in the £445+ tax bracket)..Nice car though...
