I have heard that working for car manufacturers means you can get crazy discounts on lease deals etc from the manufacturer. I'm not talking about company cars but rather those who take private deals from the manufacturers.

So what sorts of deals do the employees get?

Also heard that they offer these to motoring journalists? Not as long term test car but for personal use?

Anyone had any experience?

In 2008, Jaguar Land Rover employees at Halewood (and presumably other sites) could have a Mondeo 2.0 TDCI for £140 per month incl insurance.

My neighbours son has just started on the Evoque production line and has got himself a new Ka leased under the employee scheme. I'll ask him what it costs and report back.

This was 1987 mind.

Mum recently had Fusions for £110 p.m. IIRC

JLR managers have well specced Jags and RR's for 6-9 months, they get rolled out to dealerships for stock (look for the number of OA? reg plates in JLR dealers).

They get a good deal, and I think the tax implications are also lower if you are a car manufacturer, though I forget why...

My friend's father-in-law works for Nissan so my friend and his GF get a Nissan Note for £90 a month. Before that they had a Micra CC which I think cost £65 a month and I know the Qashqai is a bit more than the Note. Not bad prices for getting to and from work, even if the cars are a bit boring.

I suspect that atleast some of the employees are being used as long term lifestyle testing. I worked for an Automotive supplier that worked with Honda, and heard that senior guys from Swindon would be driving round in pre-release cars so that they could be tested in the real world as all sorts of things can appear that wouldn't show up on simulations or test protocols.

Lots of workers get company cars - mostly so many of the cars can effectively be pre-registered as far as I can work out. My brother-in-law works in *a department* (don't want to say online) for audi and has to change his company car every 6 months! He gets to choose virtually whatever he wants he's had an RS6 etc it's mad. I can only presume the car manufacturers do it so they can say they sold x number of vehicles and make themselves sound successful. Another relative works for Ford headquarters in a similar admin role and also gets company cars that have to be changed very frequently.

On that basis I don't think official sales figures can be trusted with a bargepole.

BMW
200 to 300 per month, including insurance for something like a 3 Series. Managers get them cheaper.
Straight discount on a cash purchase was about 16% if I remember correctly.
Some people had 120ds for 90 per month when they first came out!

Bentley
Around 200 per month for a Golf GTI or Audi TT. Not including insurance. Q7s are under 400 I think.

Vauxhall
250 per month for an Astra diesel including insurance.

They actually pay for them on an HP deal so not truly a company car, so they don't pay company car tax.

MINI's are around £200 p/m, BMW's are £250-350 p/m, includes everything apart from fuel.
Managers get them much cheaper.

Cash purchase discount is 18% IIRC, used to be 20%.

MB cheap leases for friends and family went from about 100 for an A to 300 for an S. Not Inc insurance.

More senior staff get cars for free effectively just paying a charge for insurance and ved. No company car tax payable.

Manufacturers get round the company car tax rules by lending the employee the money to buy the car at 0% interest, then buying back the car at the end of the term at the original purchase price. So the only taxable benefit for the employee is the free loan.

I used to work for Hertz many years ago, and when they got bought out by Ford we were entitled to staff discounts on new Fords & Jags - bought myself a new Escort, and it came in at around 35-40% off the list price in 1998. My first ever car with (working) air conditioning, when you switched it on it dropped the top speed by 10mph! cool

A mate of mine gets a car from Vauxhall but it's more like a personal lease than HP and there are no tax implications. I get a slightly different story on cost each time I ask about it, but the cost goes up each time and the last few cars he's had (they get changed approx every 4 months) he keeps saying will be his last as it's not worth it anymore.

My old boss's brother in law was/is very high up at Ford, he used to get a fully specced Jag or Rangerover every 6 months or so (obviously before the sell off) My old boss buys nothing but Ford and gets something silly like 30 or 40% off
