Clio 172 non cup just a boggo 172 for 2K and it will be a great frugal but fun commuter. 30mpg won't be a problem.

Few people have mentioned 1.8T's I'd imagine they could just get 30ish on a FWD set up, My S3 gets 28 at a push on the motorway and that has to lug a 4wd system with it.

+1 for the 172/182

I easily get 40mpg on the motorway. Handles like a kart and goes well enough. I think it's a the more modern 205GTI (IMHO).

Do your homework though

Mk4 Golf gti, handles that badley youll have a so called hot hatch that you wont be encouraged to drive quick so will save on fuel, i'd buy that 182 posted earlier if it was my choice.

I don't think Ibiza Cupra TDi can be had for £3k!

You could get a Ibiza FR though, or the Fabia vRS.

How is that a hot hatch?? Did it catch fire or something?
Have you owned or driven one?

I thought we were talking about 1.4 ish engine capacity and 45 mpg.
Hot hatch it is...Pulls like a train!
68bhp
168bhp surely? Those things are rocketships!

Seriously though, what about something like a Panda 100hp or a Suzuki Ignis Sport - they should both be nippy and still achieve your mpg targets.

I don't go by magic figures in a magazine but drivability.
I think that 68bhp if thats what it is comes in at around 3000rpm!
In most cases 40-70 mph accel is what you need ,not boy racer b/s!

Needless to say thats for another thread..But my idea of a hot hatch is not for road use but say track days and competition!!
I'd expect the fuel tank to get me through the day without having to worry about fuel consumption though.

I'm glad you enjoy it.

But it's not hot. 100% hatch though.

Shame that's not what everyone else on the planets definition of a hot hatch is though, is it?

I'm guessing you have a 1.4 TDCi Fiesta and that's the reason for bigging it up? I'm sorry, but a diesel engined fiesta with 0-60 over 14 seconds, is not a hot hatch, in fact it's so far from hot, it's stone cold dead.

If you want 35-40mpg and awesome fun, you need the modern 205gti, ie the clio 1*2. They are bloody brilliant!!

CTR will do 30mpg, but not much more, & you'll have to drive like a saint.
1.8T VAG mobile will be about as much fun as aids. Unless you get excited about a distinct lack of steering feel.

I was supposed to get rid of my Trophy when i bought the M3, but 4 months later and i still cant bring myself to get rid of it ...

I think the OP should get a Fiesta 1.4 diesel.

rofl I'm sorry but that's ridiculous.

As for the OP the 172s are good, I drove a mate's. How about a corrado? (not that I'm biased or anything)

New Fabia vRS (or Polo GTI etc.) is a 1.4 and does 0-60 in 7.3, so it destroys your Fiesta. But that doesn't mean it's relevant does it? The OP asked for a HOT HATCH from £2000-3000. Using your logic I suggest he buys a dog.

We're not talking 1.4 engines. The OP said he was looking at Civic Type R's, which are most certainly not 1.4's.

40mpg was easily achievable on longer runs from my FN2 CTR (basically the same engine), and over 36mpg on a couple of 'hoons' rolleyeshehe

Of course it might go down to 25mpg on short journeys with lots of VTEC'ing (once warmed up) biggrindriving

to be fair if i didn't have my Ibiza Cupra, I'd have a Clio 172 or Civic Type R. They all do a good job, and provide a cheap to run, quick little car, you just pick the one you like the most.

I clearly underestimated the old 1.4 TDCi Fiesta though... what a beast of a 'hot' hatch.

Warning very non-PH opinion:
IMO the easiest way to get a bit of poke AND 40mpg is from a VAG TDI in 130/150bhp form (or similar).

Most of the other cars mentioned would struggle to do 30mpg even driven carefully, what is the point in buying a CTR and then driving it like a granny? - I get 44mpg average from my derv as my right foot is made of lead, anyone else who drives it can get it in the 50s!

Downside of something like a Ibiza/Leon/VRS/etc is you would be looking at a high miler for that budget..... also they are 'warm' rather than 'hot', but the performance is usable without thrashing the arse off em.
