Thanks for the suggestions folks I think it's going to have to be either a ph2 172 or EP3 Type R. Time to get some quotes!

Puts it into perspective, I never once thought to put my 300BHP Focus ST in the same hot hatch category as a 1.4 diesel Fiesta like, will have to remember that for future spec me a hot hatch threads.

£3k ought to get you a nicely looked after 172ph2. If your budget was £4k then I'd be looking for a 182 and at £5k a Trophy

Warning very non-PH opinion:
IMO the easiest way to get a bit of poke AND 40mpg is from a VAG TDI in 130/150bhp form (or similar).
Wrong, you can get a bit of poke and 40mpg from a Clio 172 or 182 unless it's town driving the entire time where it will do just about 35.

If the OP was happy to go for something a little older, my suggestion would be a minty mint 306 GTi-6, as most of these are now shed money.

to be fair if i didn't have my Ibiza Cupra, I'd have a Clio 172 or Civic Type R. They all do a good job, and provide a cheap to run, quick little car, you just pick the one you like the most.

I clearly underestimated the old 1.4 TDCi Fiesta though... what a beast of a 'hot' hatch.
I shall be wary of these 1.4 Fiesta's from now on, it seems like a DC5 may be no match for one.

Shame that's not what everyone else on the planets definition of a hot hatch is though, is it?

I'm guessing you have a 1.4 TDCi Fiesta and that's the reason for bigging it up? I'm sorry, but a diesel engined fiesta with 0-60 over 14 seconds, is not a hot hatch, in fact it's so far from hot, it's stone cold dead.
Like i said ...Has anyone owned one..Are we talking 1.4 ish engines..Does figures in a magazine mean that to you!
I had a 1.6 tdci fiesta. I had to sell it and buy a petrol car as there was a group of brake members with pitchforks outside my door wanting blood after I drove to the Nurburgring lapped it in 7mins 32 and then drove to Spa entered the 24hour race and won in 22 hours before heading back to the UK where I broke the sound Barrier on the A1(M) near Peterborough.

I know you're lying due to one simple detail in your story. You said you had the 1.6.

The extra CC's are a hinderance I know but the 1.4 is so quick it has never been timed as timing gear simply cannot keep up.

I don't go by magic figures in a magazine but drivability.
I think that 68bhp if thats what it is comes in at around 3000rpm!
In most cases 40-70 mph accel is what you need ,not boy racer b/s!

Needless to say thats for another thread..But my idea of a hot hatch is not for road use but say track days and competition!!
I'd expect the fuel tank to get me through the day without having to worry about fuel consumption though.
So you chose a car with a 16 second 40-70 time?

I'd be looking at a Honda Integra Type R or a Clio 172 (Cup?)

Focus ST170? Not quite Type-R quick (or Fiesta 1.4 TDCi for that matter) but it will scrape 30mpg and do over 300 miles to a tank as long as you're not caning it everywhere. Plenty of them available within your budget.

My 172 won't get anywhere near 40mpg (maybe the computer claims to be, I don't really check) but will average about 35 on super unleaded with a mix of city/motorway and B road blasting when the opportunity arises. It's quick enough on the road and holds its own well enough on track.

If I found a really straight, well looked after GTI-6 I'd have that instead though although you'll be lucky to get low 30's out of one. Don't bother with a cheap one - find the best you can afford. They're about the same performance wise but although the Clio feels more "capable" the 306 feels more "fluid" and less manic. Difficult to explain so best to drive both to compare.

I really like them, so much I'd have another tomorrow.

Problem is I'd also want a fuel card and a bigger tank, mine was woeful despite being healthy and nearly new and 30mpg was only achievable at 65-70mph everywhere, if you used the advantage it had over a 1.8 focus then you would be lucky to see 25mpg and often it was closer to 20. At that point you would wonder what else you could run with 50-100% more power for the same money.

£3000 should get you a nice Corrado VR6.

Not suggesting you'll see this everyday but (over my 48 mile commute to work one morning) ...

No, it wasn't the most exciting drive I've ever had either smile
