Still quite slow compared to the others though. Depends how much you value fun compared to mpg.
Can you get a GT TDI for under 3k now?
My mum drives one and I paid £1750 for it which I'll admit was an absolute steal

Seems like a quality little commuter car. Won't be too long until the newer shaped ones are that cheap aswell.

If your commute is mostly A and B roads, i'd suggest a Puma. Great fun but short gearing makes it a bit thirsty over 65mph.
If your commute is mostly Motorways, i'd suggest a Leon Cupra. Not a great handler but the 6 speed box, good refinement and generous kit eats motorways all day long.
I have had experience of owning both.

Leon Cupra is a good shout, something like this would be perfect:

Imagine this with black 0Z superturismos with yellow OZ logos/writing

When you consider it's essentially an Audi S3 you realise it's a bloody good shout compared with the Audi prices for a car that age and mileage. They aren't good to look at though.

I just spotted this in the PH classifieds:

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3485653.htm

£350 over budget and probably not the most involving steer but I bet you could scare some serious metal with it: 270 f/lb of torque, and I'd be surprised if it didn't average 40mpg.

I have owned 2 Seats and really don't believe you can get much more performance and goodies for a car as new and as cheap. I would never buy an Audi or even a modern VW whilst Seat are pumping out cars made from the same parts bin for a lot less.

Some impressive claims in that advert though!

230 bhp without a bigger turbo and injectors?

Yeah I raised an eyebrow too, but I have found in the past that just because someone can't be bothered to put much effort into the advert (car unwashed, advert in CAPITALS) doesn't mean it's not potentially a nice motor. In fact I have bought cars from adverts like that before and sold them on, properly advertised, for a bit of profit.

Contented 306 Rallye owner here. I've not driven that many competitors, but did have a 4-year stint with EP3 CTRs. The 306 is never going to win any awards for quality interior plastics or precision engineering. But, as a tactile, involving drive it is just amazing. The performance is surprisingly good - even allowing for my limited driving talents I've managed to out-drag a Clio 197 and a friend's Alpina D3 in a straight line. The noise is just off the scale as well. It lacks decibles compared to my Exige but genuinely one of the best 4 cylinder engine notes I've ever heard. In the corners there's a friendly honesty and communication which never fails to make me smile. Outright grip might not be that high but it's so benign and adjustable with bags of torque to transfer the weight as you feel appropriate.

I admired my CTRs and the level of engineering is in a different league but I absolutely love my Rallye. Offered a straight swap for an EP3, I genuinely would keep the Pug, it's an infectious little bugger.

Leon Cupra or Clio 182 if you want 30mpg+. Mg Zr 160 if you want 40mpg+ (and some change)

Can the MG ZR 160 really return 40mpg? I'm a bit skeptical!

They are a good nippy little car though - but not sure I could live with one for a long commute (more than 10 miles) as they are a bit tinny and low rent.

I've had a vi which is a earlier version of the engine and returned 40 mpg on mixed driving regular so I would think so.

If you want bargain the 25 gti can be had for 500 - 600 pretty much the same as the zr but at a cheaper price.

VAG 1.8T lumps are surprisingly frugal. My TT averaged about 32/34mpg combined on 95ron with 75% mways. And that was driven with the frustrations of a man driving a TiTee y00!

Wll the OP snag a decent EP3 Type R or a Leon Cupra R 225 at his price? I doubt it, so I'd be looking for a good 106 GTi or 306 GTi-6. Or even a Rallye version, if he can forgo some amenities.

I have a gti-6 and the only negative I can really say is they are quite heavy on fuel.

I don't go by magic figures in a magazine but drivability.
I think that 68bhp if thats what it is comes in at around 3000rpm!
In most cases 40-70 mph accel is what you need ,not boy racer b/s!

Needless to say thats for another thread..But my idea of a hot hatch is not for road use but say track days and competition!!
I'd expect the fuel tank to get me through the day without having to worry about fuel consumption though.
rofl Absolutely amazing. You really put a 1,4 fiesta in the hot hatch category with type-r's and vxr's etc? Just wow.

I have had 3 1.6 mk5 fiesta zetec-s's, brilliant handling little cars but with 105bhp they are only just warm hatches.

Its not about power anyway. Its driveability and competitions.

Oh yes and "magic numbers" like they are just random numbers plucked from mid air for every car.

A 1.4 fiesta is so much more "driveable" and "competetive" than an actual hot hatch. rofl
