Interior looks horrid. Cheapo plastics and simply lazy design.

Just look at that dated early 90's digital clock on the centre console.

The problem is, the number of people that miss the point become a particular 'market' for the aftermarket tuners. Then we will see a raft of these great cars being spolit by stupid large & wide wheels, Max Power body kits, laggy turbos and rock hard lowered suspension.

I can't believe after the amount of threads and discussion there's been on the GT86 that people are still missing the point of it.

I want one of these.

Good review apart from the word "ickle" so I gave a zero. Harsh I know but a line has to be drawn somewhere.
...and the fact that Torsen diffs don't lock... /sorry, I went all nerdy there.

It is such a shame it looks terrible, as I really like the idea of it and all initials test of it are very good. If it was less than £20k I would put up with the looks but it will be over £25k and I don’t think I could spend that money on something that looks so bad, tacky even - esp. the rear lights [very 1999 lexus styleee].

For say £20k you could get a LOT of used car and spend the extra £5k on the increased running costs. And this thing will st its value like a brick - as all news cars do [excluding some exotic stuff like 911 GT3 RS 4.0s and 458's etc] so a used car would be a better long term prospect too. But I will maybe buy used FT-86 ‘phase 2 [with much improved looks’ in 5 yrs time for 10k wink
If it's around £20,000 to £25,000 it shouldn't be too desperate on depreciation while it's still pretty fresh and demand exceeds supply. But it's still a risk on how much you will lose. Just don't ask me to pick your pension though.

What's all this crap about low weight and 'Prius' skinny tyres? It seems heavier than the old DC2 Integra and massively over tyred by comparison to it.

Interior doesn't look like a conservatively designed German executive car. Interior plastics aren't as plush as a German.car Obviously these factors will make it st to drive as a luxurious interior is much more important to a sports car than lightness.

I'll bide my time until Subaru snap and make a quicker one.

WHICH IS NOT TO SAY THIS CAR IS SLOW, just that I think it'll be better when it's quicker, and that Subaru won't be able to contain their desire to bolt some kind of forced induction device to it.

The "it's not quick enough" debate is boring already. Like the "Focus RS is only front wheel drive then?" debate, it's obviously going to infect every GT86/BRZ thread. Shame.

I'm sure it's going to be a great car in just the same way that an MX5 is.

Stupid comparison
No. I drove an A5 last week and it felt like driving a washing machine. Genuinely.

I should have guessed that as soon as some one mentioned the A5 it would become an Audi bashing thread hehe

It's might drive nicely but the interior is cheap and nasty and has no fluidity to it. The outside looks naff and every bit a 'rice' car. In fact it looks like lots of rice cars that have been crashed and the untouched panels salvaged and stuck together by a frankenstein type character.

Not good. Take a look at the history of sporty cars from Toyota - MR2, celica, supra. Certainly not loved by all but still palatable to most. I think if it were Toyota's school report it would read 'must try harder'.

Shame

But, from all the initial tests its does seem to be great driving car, so fair play to Toyota for making it. I just wish they just had of made a RWD hot hatch just and sell it for about £20k, then I would def buy one first clip, and i think it would sell more and be cheaper to make.

Car enthusiasts are a hard bunch to please I know and no matter what car is reviewed people here slate it but when spending £25k to whatever you have the right to be picky. A car is, after all, the second biggest purchase everyone makes after a house

25k buys you a shopping trolley with the boost turned up, yet people think that's value.

I think really good cars necessarily divide opinion. If the German diesel contingent don't get this car, that's probably an excellent sign.
I'm afraid I fall into that camp, unless it drives fantastically what's the appeal over an A5 or 3-series coupe?

Does seem like a return to form for Toyota anyway certainly the most exciting car they've made in the past few years. Wonder if they'll do a boring hybrid version to make it fit in with the rest of range.

Is it fair to compare it to the new BMW 125d? Both cost about the same, same capacity and power, both RWD.

I am looking forward to trying both the GT86 and BRZ and it seems to have been an age for them to become a reality.

I am also glad that there are people who want more power and wider tyres and won't want these cars, they are not aimed at this type of driver, that is what the 370Z is for. The Toyota and Subaru technical people seem to be aiming for a drivers car akin to the MX5 not a lights to lights drag racer.

I think it looks excellent- at the very least, for a £25k car it looks a lot better than the van-like shopping trolley hatchback options you get near that price bracket- focus, golf, etc etc. It's also more svelt than say the corrado or the girly/ bubbly MX5 which looks hugely bland.

I think power is an issue but come on, they're jap cars- there's probably people sitting about discussing the engine mods to reach 300bhp as we speak. It's also clear that you can have a huge amount of fun with this power too- and get 42mpg combined when you fancy it

The scooby must sell better, in blue please. Currently driving a 350z and a fan of the S2000 (previously had superb but fragile lotus) I think this car makes real sense in a world where petrol is nearly £1.50 a litre. Lightweight, fun, hopefully reliable and not taking life too seriously wink

Oh yes you're absolutely right, when Toyota and Subaru were designing these cars they knew comparisons would be drawn with the Porker, but thanks for your input anyway.
