So £26k for an ornament, or if you want to actually drive the thing it presumably will need a complete mechanical rebuild as it has never been serviced, so say another £6-8k on top to get it into useable condition??

Why would it need a rebuild? None of the parts will be worn. New oil, filters and hoses should see it as good as new shouldn't it?

Full body kit + blue zenon headlamps + new wheels from Halfords and a "banging" ICE system and it may tempt a few "punter geezers"?

Was friends with a Salesman at the local Ford Garage. He gave me the keys to a brand new unregistered RS, the day after it had been delivered from the factory.
So I took it for a spin around the local country roads. Trouble was, the highways dept had just put down loose chippings EVERYWHERE!
I eneded up driving at 10 mph for about a hour, listening to the clatter of stones on the pristine paintwork.
The salesman never let be loose on any other cars after that for some reason.

Really nice, I have always liked the shape of the MK3 Escort (also have a bit of a thing for the Orion Mark II). Didn't realise they were FWD though.

Having said that, 26k is crazy as at that price the car is basically just an ornament. The value of the car would plummet if you actually drove it...... surely buying a *nice* example for a fraction of that price and then actually using it would be more fun?

There was a black one advertised on here last autumn that was in as good a condition as this one in fact when i saw it i could not believe how clean it was and that was advertised for £9995.00 ono.Yes the miles are low but not 16k low and the black imo looked better too. Some really mint mk2 rs2000's have recently been fetching low to mid 20k's so the mk3's are not there yet.I loved the 1600i's as a friend of mine had one for his 18th birthday,a red 2004 car and it was way better than the xr3's in every way but 26k !!!

Just because it's clean doesn't make it good

I hate this car with a passion which cannot be explained

you could buy a well looked after integrale for that money, and that is a true rally legend.

like others have said i would be concerned that this needed alot of work as its basically been sat since new, its like buying a car of an old dear whose never used it, once you start to use it, it would go wrong

SHUT UP!111 ITS A RALLYCAR LEGEND AND MOTORSPORT HERO! EVERYONE SHOUDL LOVE AND RESPECT DESE CARES THEY ARE THE BEST OF THE ERA1!

But it is in good condition, and I would say it is worth the money that one would orginally have to pay for it, taking into account inflation, as it has hardly been used, and is now far rarer.

That's exactly where my money would go.

Ok;
I had a 10k mile from new RS500 which I sold out to Malta 2 years ago for £35k. A lot of money then. But, it had been serviced, all fluids changed regularly whilst sat in a collection.
I wouldn't touch this unless proof positive could be given of regular fluid changes, as brake fluid is hydroscopic, and unless oil and antifreeze are changed regularly I hate to think what could have happened to the head, oil ways and water ways etc.
I love old fast Fords, truly, but this is way ott and can never, ever be used regularly if the new owner wants to retain the value;
Buy a painting by a famous artist instead, or a classic watch - you can sit and watch those instead and watch (ha ha) them appreciate.....
Sorry, to me this should be put in a public classic auction (Coys or Bonhams) to judge its real value!

Hang on aren't we on here because we are petrol heads?

If it floats your boat, good for you.

If it was my thing, and the cash was there.....................

look beyond the price tag, we are car nuts!

that will sit around for a long time before someone gets it for 10k eventually

Even the most ardent speculator can see its a blatant try on, nobody with 26k to invest would seriously consider that car to be worth that money

I fail to see either how it will be as pleasurable to own and drive for anyone with a Ford passion when there are so many other better cheaper "classics" available

Way over priced, not unlike some prices of 'Classic' Minis. No doubt a classic but it was never a particularly expensive car in the first place and 80's Escorts don't define a period of classic hand built manufacturing either. £5k tops IMO.

Its worth it to a collector, and lets face it it's really only collectors that will buy cars like this wether its a Ford or a Ferrari.

That will sell, and it probably is worth it. It doesn't have to be a vintage Ferrari for people to want to collect.

I know its overpriced and daft of the seller to even attempt this but.......

Isnt Riggers going a bit far with that write up? The seller has paid his advert premium only to have the PH Honcho rip it apart on the front page of a public forum. I can see Riggers point entirely but if i were the seller i'd be pissed about what was written. Riggers might have effectively cost the seller money in my opinion! You can sell an empty box for £1'000'000 on ebay if there is someone daft enough to buy it, but that'll only happen if nobody steps into the light and puts up a big 'DO NOT BUY' sign.

You'd have to be dumb as the people who bought these bits of Ford junk when they were new to spend 26 large on a Dagenham Dustbin. The Opel was a far better car, RWD and much quicker, the Golf GTi more iconic and the 205GTi more fun.
The manta was more of a direct competitor for the Capri, and was a bit of a 'Gary' car. It also wasn't that good to drive.

The Mk2 Golf Gti was launched just after the RS1600i, and although it was a great car, it was of course bigger and bit frumpier than the mk1 (I've owned both). The 205Gti hadnt long been in production, and I agree, it was a hoot to drive. The ford felt a bit more solid though, and the interiors were better.

Also, there seemed to be Ford dealers everywhere back then. Ease of servicing etc.

We also didn't know then what we know now as regards to rust and top-end engine weaknesses in the cvh lump...

£26k is obviously ridiculous though. When I first saw it, I though £16k absolute tops. Judging by the replies so far, I was way out on that too.....

My rule of thumb (for good design), "would you have the base model"?
mk3 escort - not a chance
My first car (in 1990 I think) was an A-reg base model (I hope – a 1.3L and was pretty basic even then) Escort Mk3 two-door estate, in beige with brown interior. Great to be mobile and in my own car, happy days smile
