I had an Atlas grey mk2 (but a 16v) when they were only a few years old and I absolutely loved it. I had it on 3 wheels quite a few times and moved house a few times with everything squeezed into the back. I really miss that car.

I had an F reg 3dr 8v years ago and hated it paperbag

My previous 2 cars had been an E30 325i Sport and a 1.9 205 Gti so going into the Golf it just felt under powered, lifeless and boring.

Sold it again after only 3 months

Agree the BM was a 'competitor' for the MKII 16V at the time, whereas the Pug 1.9, whilst fast and nimble, was a few notches down on quality and overall 'maturity'. That's how it felt when I bounced from a new Pug 1.6, to a new 1.9 and then to a new 16V.

One way to spice up a truly fabulous classic and surprise more than a few people...... Audi S3 1.8T engine + MK2 Golf GTI = 242bhp, 317lbs/ft, 1050kgs and rather a big smile.

Respect! Now that is cool. I love old cars modernised.
Cheers Dave. In terms of bang for your buck, it's a steal. So much fun to drive and a testament to how well the car was built in the first place. The chassis can (just about..) handle the power although needs treating with respect. Even with everything uprated chassiswise, with no electronic gizmos like traction control or ABS, driving is always entertaining and rewarding. In wet weather, 70mph wheel spin in 4th powering out of corners helps to keep you focused plus a top end nudging 160mph....gulp

A great car even in standard form, ( finding a good one takes time though ) and still looks good today compared with cars of the same era. They also have a huge following still even after 20 years which to me says a lot for the way it was designed and put together. An iconic car with bags of character and a bargain price, find a tidy one and you'll be laughing. Shoe horn a 1.8t lump in and you'll never look back...

Thought I'd put a pic of my Oak Green MK2 16V, 2 owner, with 254,000 miles of which 252,000 was covered by the first owner. It's also got a full VW service history. I've owned it for two years now but I've known the car for the past sixteen years as it was my ex neighbours daily driver for almost nineteen years. It's completely standard even as far as the original number plates and original Alan Day Finchley stickers on the windows and Alan Day tax disc holder.

It's not for sale and I probably never will sell it as it owes me nothing as I bought it for next to nothing. It's just been undersealed and waxoyled and is currently sitting on one side of the garage under a cover for the winter.

Cracking cars, I've had 4 and all 8vs (although no 5 doors). I prefer the earlier small bumper cars. 197K is nothing to worry about, it's just run in!

THis is my current one:

Drove mine 75 miles on Friday, 75 on Saturday and 300 today - I saw one other 91 car on the road - a 316i.

They really don't make them like that any more.

A 22 year old barely warm hatch with 200,000 miles under it's belt for £800. Oh yes a veritable bargain, but only if the VW badge give you an erection.

Better not mention the unnecessary full stop after the exclamation mark....
