The new shape one is a cracking car, much lighter and more agile than the first.
The new shape came out in 2010? I cant quite stretch to that...
I should be clear also that doesn't in my opinion mean the old shape is a bad'un - we looked closely at one before we bought the BMW, it was just a bit too big for us.

Take the sensible option, get an XC90. One of my tutors at college replaced a Touareg with an XC90, she looked at Q7s aswell but in the end thought more of the Volvo.

Get the wife to test drive it first - the only Q7s on our school run have to park about half a mile away as they're too big to park anywhere else. Supertankers spring to mind.
Discos/X5s struggle too - have you thought about estate 4wds - Subarus/Audi A6/Allroads?

How about a Merc GL? Big, comfy and reliable. Mate has one with lots of miles on and it never puts a foot wrong.

We've got an ML and a Legacy. The footprint isn't that much different.

I've driven a a mates T-Reg and I thought it was a nice car....good interior but a pretty poor drive to be honest. I've got an X5 which I know you don't want but in my mind it's a much nicer car to drive....admittedly I didn't drive them back to back but I just remember being underwhelmed when I drove the T-Reg. You can get a 2007 X5 for less than £25k.....a lot of car for the money.
For some reason the design of the X5 grates on me. Dont know why...I'm probably 100% correct in assuming the X5 is the better all round car.
Well it's not the car for you then! The T-Reg is definitely a good looking car in the class and much less common on the roads. What about the ML ?!?! Or dare I say it the Cayenne ?

the 245 engine in the new touareg is the same one as fitted to the cayenne but is 25k less does seem a lot of car for the bucks

The dropping of anchors in deeper waters may well be down to who's captaining them. But seriously, the Q7 is flamin' huge, or at least it looks it. Maybe it's the width, I don't know, but in a normal parking space it looks, erm, cramped. Down the side streets near the school only Pickfords has more road prescence.
A Toerag or Disco is more, how can I put it delicately, under-the-radar than a Q7/X6/Surburban-rollin'on-24s?

Ooooh, get you...rofl

Toe rag is the way to go. Q7 looks bloody awful and women have to park them on the footpath for reasons that escape me....

Friend of mine has a V70. Big problems with the gearbox and Volvo have been worse than useless and avoided sorting the problem.
Q7 was a pleasure to drive but glad it was a rental, the throttle is a but too savage.
Wife had an ML which was excellent but her last two have both been Murano's which are also excellent.
You could do what I did and get 2 TVR's smile 4 seats but they can move around 2 at a time smile

Car Length Width Height
BMW X5 4854 mm 1933 mm 1776 mm
Mercedes ML 4780 mm 2127 mm 1779 mm
Audi Q7 5089 mm 2177 mm N/A
Range Rover Sport 4798 mm 2170 mm 1812 mm
Subaru Legacy 4720 mm 1730 mm 1470 mm

There's just under 45cm difference in width between a Q7 and my Legacy. A little less for the ML. I confess that it is tight getting out of the ML in a normal parking space in Tesco but the fact that you tend to step down from it means I don't need to open the door as far anyway.

As you can see, my Legacy and my wife's ML are more or less the same length but it seems that the Q7 is quite a bit longer than its competition. The figures are from the Parkers website - quite a revelation because I'd have thought all 4X4s would be of a similar size.

Really - surprises me...does one poor experience make the whole marque terrible then?

After a good few yrs in various Volvos and dealing with Arnold Clark at that - I was given nothing but fantastic service by Volvo and the garage.

Had an autobox play up once and it was replaced within days, no quibbles or issues.

What I like about Volvo is their attention to the customer, I had a commuting S60 for a while last yr. Got it serviced by Volvo as a rule and they sent me a letter with a yrs free breakdown cover - even though it was a very basic service.

My honest view is go for the Volvo everytime - the XC90 or XC60 are nice places to be in and keep their value well.

I just cannot abide Q7s however so not well placed to comment.
