The time has come...

I turn 21 next week and it is finally time for a new car. I currently drive a Fiesta Zetec S mk 6, which has now become boring to drive, I would like something more powerful, and needs to be fun to drive.
The trouble is I really don't know what I want, I have been looking at cars like the Elise and vx220, but a hatchback would be more ideal as I often carry all my equipment which fills the boot and back seats of the Zetec S.
My budget will be around £8000, insurance isn't really an issue so all options will be considered.

Thats a pretty nice budget. It wont get you into an Elise but you have tons of options.
You could probably get an E46 M3 for that or certainly a really nice 330ci Msport and a lot of money left over . 350Z is an option if you dont mind 2 seats. Maybe S2000 if you want a convertible or a 3.0 Z4.
Tons of choice.

Monaro? Reasonably sized boot (bit bigger than the fiesta I think?)
Renault? Could get an R26.
Want to keep with the blue oval? - focus st or a 1st gen rs
Loads of options really - depends on what you like the look of/whether you want a car with loads of muscle or a more nimble car (I guess VX220/elise suggests the latter). A sporty renault may be the best bet.
Or to be very PH - an mx-5 with a trailer.

Something a bit more nimble would be best really, I've always wanted an Elise but I think it could be more of a second car in a few years.
In terms of insurance not really being an issue, I'm happy to pay quite a lot for something I love, rather than the £500 I spend now on the Zetec S.
The r26 Megane is a good shout, I've looked at them and r32 golf's, I've not looked into the focus st, which I'm sure would be quite a good step up from the fiesta.

TVR Chimaera? Massive boot for a sports car, although I'm not entirely certain whether your equipment would fit. Would certainly tick a lot of boxes - fun to drive, awesome noise, looks, reasonable to insure on a classic/limited mileage/specialist policy. Tried and tested Rover V8 power, simple to work on and reasonably cheap parts.

You'd be surprised at insurance for fun cars. I'm the same age as the OP (21) but insurance on my E46 M3 costs about a grand fully comp. At 20 my VX220 Turbo was £1100 fc, you never know with insurance.
If I were you OP I'd go down the VXT route - you'll enjoy it!
I was 22 last time I was dealing seriously with insurance and M3s were coming back double anything else for me, E46 or E92 made no difference. My postcode is minimum risk. If I were you OP I'd go down the VXT route - you'll enjoy it!
I went for a Porsche Cayman which was considerably less than half than the quotes on M3. My Mustang(I might just be a pornographer) is running ~950hp declared and is still much less.
I'm 23 now, and again nothing is as high as an M3, I'm actively looking for a V8V/gallardo/430 and they are coming back around 70% of the price of M3 quotes.
Perhaps BMW hates me. But yes, never know with insurance.

how do the late teen/early 20's people on here afford such flash motors as FisiP1
may i ask your occupation?
Many young folks on here with flasher motors than I! may i ask your occupation?
I provided what basically amounted to a digital concierge service for online gamers from Kuwait and occasionally the UAE. Put myself through college in the US(hence I bought the current mustang) and have enough for some nice motors and financially stress free postgrad study in the UK.
