Apologies for the naff title, but words were limited.

To cut a long story short I have recently bought a cherished plate from a friend. I have the transfer paperwork and the transfer fee has been paid.

I'd rather go to a local DVLA office to sort this out, my local office being Theale, Reading.

I am hoping to change the address on my V5 at the same time..

Is this a straight forward process? it seems far too easy having dealt with DVLA in the past with various issues!

I'll assume I just need to take the necessary paperwork, sign a couple of bits and smile nicely?

Unfortunately they won't do it at your local DVLA office anymore like they used to. If you go with the paperwork they'll just take it off you and then you'll have to wait for the confirmation and paperwork to come through the post before putting it on your car.

Thanks for your help, as I thought it would be too simple for it to happen there and then lol.

Well I went to do this a few weeks ago at Worcester DVLA office and they did it there and then. Took about 10 minutes. It was not overly busy when I went so maybe that is the difference.

They used to do it there and then but recently they changed it for reasons I don't know.

ETA: Maybe some offices still do it then but I was under the impression and from being turned away before that they no longer do it. If it's not too far away OP it might still be worth a trip to see.

It's only a half hour trip for me, the trouble is they don't have an enquiries number. I'll take a gamble. smile

so you went there filled out the forms, came home and fitted your new plate? I'll assume they give you a new tax disc there and then too in that case.

So to satisfy my curiosity I rang the DVLA. They can confirm it is just a case of walking in with the following

Grantee/Nominee form for the plate
MOT
V5
Photocopy of tax disc.

Sorted smile

To confirm, yes, they do give you a new tax disc there and then.

I should have asked in the office but forgot, technically, should I have changed the plates in the car park? And called the insurance company?....

I did it when I got home, but wondered what the score would be if I got pulled over with a tax disc that didn't match the plates. And technically no insurance noted on that particular plate for ANPR. silly

I am taking my other car to the office, doing the deed there, coming home and replacing plates/tax disc etc on the drive.

That is of course if the car is still there and not crushed as it is an 'un-taxed' car biggrin

I'm starting to think I was fobbed off by someone who couldn't be arsed.

Yes - very helpful they were when I did this recently.

I asked about the tax disc and they said to put the new one on and change the plates as soon as practicable, and to keep the documents for the new plates in the car in case stopped on the way.

Daniel (2nd poster) must have been very rude to them to get turned down...!

Back in November I transferred at a local DVLA no problems. I was also told by a friend that done this before that they wont do it there and then. I wonder if there is some fobbing off going on?

Dropped my transfer request off late one evening in the Chelmsford office post box. New MOT certs, tax discs and authorisation to purchase the new plates were back through my letter box in three working days.

V5s came a couple of days later. smile

DVLA office in Norwich completed a transfer for me earlier this year. Very straightforward, also willing to help & answer other questions as well. Make the most of it guys and gals, the current government has plans to close all local offices; we will then be posting all paperwork to Swansea (what joy!).

I already had the certificate they just processed it and gave me a replacement tax disc and MOT with the V5 to follow in the post. Used another car so had no issue with plate swapping in car parks etc.
