I have not driven in the States since the mid 90s but I found it really enjoyable after getting used to the car and the different traffic. Loved charging around the freeways of LA.

Unlike our motorways though, you can come off a freeway and then realise that it was the wrong exit but there isn't an entry ramp at the same junction which means navigating the surface streets and trying to find your way back to the freeway.

Happened to us and we ended up cruising around Inglewood with all the Homies staring at the white boys in their pristine Oldsmobile. Arse puckering.

What I meant was the 'information overload' of stuff happening can be a bit intimidating, esp if you are not completely aware of that countries signs / customs / etc.

I soon acclimatised / learnt what I needed and as I said I enjoyed my road trip round North America smile

Everyone drives like a tt but everyone knows that everyone drives like a tt and its just works.

Don't argue with a copper if they stop you even if you are in the right. Imagine being at school and being shouted at by the scariest teacher ever, now imagine him with a gun!

I have driven in Orlando , California including La where i spent a lot of time stationary.

Remember when turning right you can if safe to do so , and turning right seems faaar away !

Yanks dont seem to seem to flash there lights for you to move in , just go.

In fact i never saw anyone flash there lights to let you in , let you pass or otherwise.

They are friendly though , they allways seem to know the tourists !

Some of the single worst driving I have ever encountered is in the Virginia / DC metropol areas, its insane. Kill or be killed and might is right. The only brain fart I have had was when turning right into a junction and automatically go over to the left lane.......... The hire cars are great especially at the choose your own ones like Alamo where you book in and get a selection to choose from in the parking lot, I usually go for for the luxury section, last time we were over and they had V70's, A8's etc, of course I went for the Caddy with the Northstar V8. When in Rome and all that.

Generally I found the standard of driving in the U.S. ok to shocking, depending on which part of the country I was in. Apologies if these have been said before but if stopped by the police/authorities be uber polite and call them sir/ma'am, and always stop at stop signs!- they have them for most residential area junctions instead of our 'give-way', I got pulled over once for not coming to a complete stop at a junction with a stop sign. Driving on the right is easy and just remember only right foot needed for an automatic. They drive a lot slower than us and Europe in general and driving long distances at interstate speed limits (in the NE at least) I found difficult!

Being allowed to turn right on red always seems to catch me out the first day when I drive over there.
