No idea.
The report highlighted the brakes were lacking during hard use and, very broadly speaking, bigger brakes will be better in this regard.
I am not sure how much that would translate to real use.
That car had probably spent the full day being absolutely hammered around a twisty track back motoring journalists.
Bigger discs aren't always necessary, cut and drilled made very little difference on my mx5. What made a huge difference was the type of pad. Carbon was phenomenal but I used half the pads up in 2000 miles! Ceramic was a good second place and lasted a lot longer smile

Which pads did you use? The carbon ones? Got a link?

Performance 5 ones look reasonable...

Axxis: http://www.performance5.com/brake_pads.asp Any experience of them? I am sure they are decent...it's just personal reviews are usually better smile

Both carbon and ceramic were Hawk ones. Similar to these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MAZDA-RX7-2-3-84-85-HAWK... but for a mx5 (can't find a set for a 5 atm!).

An NSX has st brakes on a track, but fine for normal road use. This is not uncommon for road cars.

Just spotted my top quality typo!

Clearly I meant to say 'track by motoring journalists'.

Now i have got that off my chest i feel much better.
Having actually sat in the GT-86 (at a What Car reader clinic) I was surprised to find that the rear seats were better than I expected, they would be usable for shorter journeys. I've had MX-5s for the last 7 years and can really see how the extra seats will be useful.

I could not disagree more. Chris Harris makes for a much needed and much more refreshing change from the norm. I have enjoyed every one of his vids so far and have gone away informed and entertained.
So if I understand you correctly he writes badly, he drives very badly but he interesting to listen to and funnier than Clarkson?

Anyway, FFS can we stop critiquing every fking article and just get back to the cars?

PH - Banging on interminably about Chris Harris MATTERS, more than cars it turns out.
Im quite sure you understood me perfectly and are being pedantic in reflection of my lazyness at splitting the comment I was referring to. If you are so eager just to talk about cars then why are you adding to the side debate rather than commenting on the car?

A fair point.

Lost entirely when 'Director Bloke' wades in and makes it. Tongue in cheek or not.

Are you not able to watch from the stands and let us mere mortals wage our pithy wars, make our inane comments and accept that some old cliches will be wheeled out time and again?

Moderation is one thing, but pouncing on those who consciously or otherwise perpetuate discussion, albeit tired, is not necessary from a director's PoV. Is it?

This said, after your numerous point scoring retorts.

Good article/vid as ever from CH.

'kin hell, have you not been around enough to remember some of PetrolTed's 'point scoring retorts'?

It's all part of maintaining the standards that made this forum so popular, and it doesn't matter who the comment comes from.

I'd personally change 'point scoring' to 'point making'.

Every single new car thread has comments regarding what you could buy second hand for the same money, and every single time it's both ridiculous and downright stupid.

In some ways this meme is even more annoying as it just won't die like all the others have. Saying that, some of the previous tttish memes only got killed through moderation.

Can I write 'nuke the OXO tower from orbit, it's the only way to win a Lotus' without being sinbinned yet?

wink

(meme stuff not directly aimed at you, but get your chip off your shoulder about being a 'mere mortal' compared to 'director bloke', the hierarchy on here is the flattest I've ever experienced in a forum.)

I knew it was only a matter of time till some smart arse came along and made that comment, if it hadnt been olf it would have been someone else, however for someone who just wanted to talk about cars he is conspicuous in his absence!

Cheers, you've expressed it far more eloquently than I'd have been able to. I shall, err, double your daily stipend forthwith.

Brochures for the GT 86 are at dealerships now, just picked one up.

Nothing new but does confirm the trim details
Black or Red Alcantara, red stitching
Red Alcantara with red leather inserts
Or base is black fabric, red stitching

Like the video & write up, but i wish he'd stop banging on about sliding a cars. How many people actually do that on the open road, or a track day? Not many!
C'mon really, you've never drifted a car, you don't know what your missing. Call me irresponsible but I've put my cars sideways on both road and tracks and I'm an old fart. You really should try it!
Good video Chris and please keep those drifts a comin. Keep the shiny side up!

I just found out one of the OE tyres on the GT 86 is the Michelin Primacy.

Interesting tyre choice - logically as it's a "sports" car, the Pilot Sport 3 would have been the more logical choice.

Make of that what you will.

Isn't that just confirmation of the early reports that the car would use the same tyres specificed for the top spec Prius?

They made a big thing of this though Jon iirc - the car wouldn't be on the grippiest rubber available in a particular size. Otherwise they could have chosen something like R1Rs or Yoko Advans

Have you read the reports suggesting that this car prioritises fun over grip?

I guess not.

Yes, that was my point.

However...

Fun is a nice direct steering and a predictable slide. A touring tyre gives comfort and low road noise. Raw outright dry grip between something like a primacy 3 and pilot sport 3 will be very close, it will be down to how the deliver it.

they make a selling point of it using low-grip Prius tyres.
